Expected Student Behavior

Deadlines (Every Assignment on Time): In class we will explore course content through multimedia presentations, group exercises, seminar style discussions, a museum field trip, online coursework, written work, and traditional slide lectures.  Attendance is very important, as your feedback on the major themes of the course will aid in the understanding, appreciation, and comprehension of the content.  Your completion of the online reading is crucial to your ability to master the concepts and complete this course.  I have assigned coursework over the semester at a manageable rate.  The reading & online study plan is due weekly.  Please see the course calendar for specific assignments and due dates.   Assignments will be turned in through ACConnect until the deadline.  Late assignments will not be accepted, except in the case of extreme hardship from an excused absence.  Late assignments will only be accepted and graded at the professor’s discretion.

Communication: I will only contact you via email through ACConnect.  I will not email you directly to a Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo, or any other email address. It is your responsibility to make sure you have access to and check your email (Please see Resources in AC Connect below).  I expect you to check your campus email and our course on weekdays so that you may come to class prepared.

Resources in AC Connect: This is a traditional course that you will attend during scheduled class times, but we also have course resources posted in AC Connect, including your textbook. To find our AC Connect course, go to http://www.actx.edu/ and click on the "AC Connect" link (direct link is https://acconnect.actx.edu/). Your login for our AC Connect course is the same as your ADNetID. If you have password or ID issues, please contact AskAC at 806-371-5000. Our AC Connect course resources will not be available until after classes begin.  You will be provided further instruction on how to access the required text with our for this course and access the online coursework in class for free with our specific course code.

Course Content: Students understand that in the study of art styles and art history that occasionally there may be a tasteful representation of a nude (such as in Greek Classical Art), and agree to handle that content in a mature and responsible way.

Acceptable Student Behavior: Classroom behavior should not interfere with the instructor’s ability to conduct the class or the ability of other students to learn from the instructional program. Unacceptable or disruptive behavior will not be tolerated. Students engaging in unacceptable behavior may be instructed to leave the classroom. Inappropriate behavior may result in disciplinary action or referral to the college.  This prohibition applies to all instructional forums, including electronic, classroom, labs, discussion groups, field trips, etc. Students are expected to respect themselves and each other.   Upon entrance into our class, please silence your phone and all electronic devices.

Dropping, Withdrawing, and Non Credit Status: The student is responsible for dropping courses, withdrawing from college by the last day to drop a course, changing to non-credit status, etc., if the need arises. See the Amarillo College master calendar on the AC website and our course calendar for the date of the last day to drop a course. The instructor will not drop any student after the last day to drop a course.

Grading Criteria

Grading

The final grade is based on the weighted average scores earned by completing reading assignments, midterm and final exams, a term project, written assignments, and participation in the course.

90 - 100%  = A

80 - 89%  = B

70 - 79%  = C

60 - 69% = D

0 - 59% = F

Midterm Exam: worth up to 15% of the final grade. See description of this exam in the “Required Exams” section of the syllabus.

Final Exam: worth up to 15% of the final grade. See description of this exam in the “Required Exams” section of the syllabus.

Term Project: worth up to 20% of the final grade. The term project is due near the end of the course and consists of guidelines that the instructor will provide in the course.

Written Assignments: You will be assigned written work worth 10% of your final grade.  These assignments will be submitted online.   Rubrics will be provided.  Please utilize the Writer’s Corner for review of your completed written assignments before uploading them to me for grading.  The tutors will assist you with grammar, organization, and language, but not content.

Online Chapter Exams: You have been assigned weekly reading on our course calendar.  I will assess your comprehension of the text through online chapter exams that are worth 40% of your final grade.  One chapter is due each week.  Please refer to our course calendar.   To complete the chapter exams login to our AC Connect course site, click on the Content Button on the right hand side of our page, click on the Pearson’s MyArtsLab assignment calendar button, click on the due date for each chapter exam (every Tuesday) to access the complete content for each chapter,  review the chapter objectives, and read the text either online or in your book (you may need to scroll down the exercise list to find the online chapter text).    You may then proceed to the online assessment assigned for each chapter.  Take the pre-test (Formative Assessments).  If you do not have passing scores on the pre-test (Formative Assessments), complete the recommended online Study Plan material to help you improve. Alternately, if you pass the pre-test you can move directly to the Chapter Exam. To complete the study plan you must obtain a passing score on the Chapter Exam.  You will be graded on the Chapter Exams.

Extra Credit & Participation Grade:  I do not award extra credit.  However if you actively participate in class discussion, activities and group work I will offer the opportunity to complete an art exhibition experience report.  Completion of this report will excuse one absence (see Attendance for an explanation of how attendance affects your grade).

Required Exams:

Midterm and Final Exams - A Midterm and Final Exam is required for the course.  No student is exempt from the Midterm and Final Exam. A midterm and a final exam will be given to facilitate visual analysis and verbal discussion of correct art vocabulary and a general understanding of the major artists and art styles covered in the course.  Exams must be taken during the designated time. In the case of a medical or family emergency, exams may be made up at the discretion of the instructor if the student provides documentation of the emergency to the instructor.

Attendance

Attendance: Every Class, On Time

After 3 absences, your final grade will be lowered by one letter for every additional unexcused absence.  For example, a student who earns a B average through coursework would earn a C after 4 unexcused absences, and a D after 5 unexcused absences.

The instructor provides the opportunity to learn; therefore it is essential to meet in class as scheduled.  Each student is responsible for any information or instructions missed because of tardiness or absence. A doctor’s note or obituary is acceptable if presented after class time.  Other excused absences are defined as those that are the result of exceptional distress or unforeseen circumstances.  Save your three absences for times that you really need them.  It is the student's responsibility to notify the instructor about all matters concerning attendance, such as, absences, arriving late to class, etc.  Please see the section on Communication for this course.  The student is also responsible for dropping courses by the last day to drop, withdrawing from college, changing to non-credit status, etc., if the need arises. The instructor will not drop any student after the last day to drop..

  • Class participation is part of my assessment of student progress and is worth a percentage of final grading in this course.
  • A sign in sheet will be available in the beginning of class and will be collected at the before class activities commence.  Students must sign this to get credit for attendance, signing in for someone else will result in a zero credit for both parties.  If students repeatedly leave class early, the sign in sheet will re-circulate 5 minutes before class ends.
  • Class time is not to be used for other class assignments.
  • Students are responsible for assignments and information missed during an absence, excused or not.
  • If we are experiencing severe weather in this area (for example road closures due to icy and snow packed roads) I will email all students in my courses with a class cancelation as soon as possible.  I follow the Canyon & Amarillo School District School Closing Announcements and will cancel class should the districts do so. Do not risk your life in severe weather to come to class – I will let you make up the work for that day, and will excuse your absence in extremely bad weather.
