HIST-1301-DC001 United States History I
Prerequisite: RDNG 0331-minimum grade of C or a score on a state-approved test indicating college-level reading skills
A survey of the social, political, economic, cultural and intellectual history of the United States from the pre-Columbian era to the Civil War/Reconstruction period. United States History I includes the study of pre-Columbian, colonial, revolutionary, early national, slavery and sectionalism, and the Civil War/Reconstruction eras. Themes that may be addressed in United States History I include: American settlement and diversity, American culture, religion, civil and human rights, technological change, economic change, immigration and migration, and creation of the federal government.

Students need internet access so that they can take the online tests in Blackboard and read the Retrieving the Past ereader.
Student Performance/Learning Outcomes (Minimum Competencies):
After studying the material presented in this course, the student will be able to:
1. Create an argument through the use of historical evidence.
2. Analyze and interpret primary and secondary sources.
3. Analyze the effects of historical, social, political, economic, cultural, and global forces on this period of United States history.

Course requirements/grading:
Exams: There will be three major examinations during the semester plus a final exam on Monday, November 30. Exams will be multiple choice and cover the readings from Farmer et al., Foundations of American History and the Retrieving the Past ereader. Students are not allowed to drop an exam. Each exam is 50 questions worth 2 points apiece for a total of 100. The possible number of points in the class is 400, with 360 points needed for an ‘A,’ 320 for a ‘B,’ 280 for a ‘C,’ and 240 for a ‘D.’
Makeup Exams: There are no makeup exams without prearrangement with the instructor. It is imperative that students contact the instructor before exam day if they know they will be absent so that arrangements can be made or before noon on exam day if they are missing school due to illness or absent for some other reason whether it be accident, a death in the family, etc.
Amarillo College Attendance Policy: Regular attendance is necessary for satisfactory achievement. Therefore, it is the responsibility of the student to attend class at their respective high schools.
