Course Description

Chemical equilibrium; phase diagrams and spectrometry; acid-base concepts; thermodynamics; kinetics; electrochemistry; nuclear chemistry; an introduction to organic chemistry and descriptive inorganic chemistry.

Student Performance

Upon successful completion of this course, students will:

1. State the characteristics of liquids and solids, including phase diagrams and spectrometry.
2. Articulate the importance of intermolecular interactions and predict trends in physical properties.
3. Identify the characteristics of acids, bases, and salts, and solve problems based on their quantitative relationships.
4. Identify and balance oxidation-reduction equations, and solve redox titration problems.
5. Determine the rate of a reaction and its dependence on concentration, time, and temperature.
6. Apply the principles of equilibrium to aqueous systems using LeChatelier’s Principle to predict the effects of concentration, pressure, and temperature changes on equilibrium mixtures.
7. Analyze and perform calculations with the thermodynamic functions, enthalpy, entropy, and free energy.
8. Discuss the construction and operation of galvanic and electrolytic electrochemical cells, and determine standard and non-standard cell potentials.
9. Define nuclear decay processes.
10. Describe basic principles of organic chemistry and descriptive inorganic chemistry

Expected Student Behavior

\ Please be respectful of the other students in class.  Turn off cell phones/pagers.  Pay attention in class.  Do not be disruptive.  If you arrive late, do not try to go to your accustomed seat, but quietly take a chair close to the door.  If you are causing a disruption in class, you may be asked to leave.  If there is any evidence of cheating on any homework, quiz, test, or final, you will receive a zero for that item and cannot make it up or replace it and it cannot be dropped.

Grading Criteria

Tests: There will be three tests covering atleast three chapters  The test date will be announced at least a week in advance.  If a test is missed it will automatically count as a zero.  There are NO makeup exams.  Work must be legible and the final answer must be clearly indicated to receive credit.  If special accommodations become necessary, arrangements must be made BEFORE (at least 24 hours prior) the exam date and you must have WRITTEN permission from the instructor.  You may not leave the room during a test.  No tests will be handed out once someone has left the room.  During tests, there are no cell phones, pagers, or graphing calculators allowed.  You must use the periodic tables, scratch paper, and calculators supplied by the department. If you fail an exam you MUST get tutoring over what you missed before you take the next exam.

Graded tests will be returned during class time or please stop by at my office.

Science Testing Center:

Warren Hall 112

All tests, excluding the Final Exam, will be taken in the Science Testing Center and may be taken during normal Science Testing Center hours, day or evening.  Tests are to be taken outside of class lecture time.     Please note:  No tests will be given out less than one and a half hours before the Science Testing Center closes. You must present an Amarillo College student ID every time you take a test. The Science Testing Center staff will retain your ID while you take your test and it will be returned to you when you turn in your test.

When using the Science Testing Center students should scan in and out with their Amarillo College student I.D.

Attendance

Attendance in class is expected. The last date to drop a course with a grade of “W” is 11/17/2015. Dropping the course is the sole responsibility of the student.  Failure to officially withdraw will result in a grade of F.

Reading the Text:  It is vital that you read the text BEFORE the lecture on that chapter.  This will greatly improve your understanding of the topic and therefore your grade.  As there is a large amount of information to cover in this class, not all of it can be covered in the time allotted for class.  You are responsible for the information presented in the text even if it is not covered in lecture and vice versa.

INFORMATION SHEET/SIGNATURE:  You must fill out and return the information sheet for this class (handed out and posted in AC Online).  You must also sign it to signify that you have read and understand the syllabus.  No graded assignments will be returned to you and you will not be shown your overall grades or have any grades posted for you until the signed information sheet is turned in.
