Course Description

Study of the concepts and principles necessary to perform basic nursing skills for the adult patient; and demonstrate competence in the performance of nursing procedures. Content includes knowledge, judgment, skills and professional values within a legal/ethical framework. This course lends itself to a blocked approach.

Civility Statement

Students are full partners in fostering a classroom environment which is conducive to learning.  In order to assure that all students have the opportunity to gain from time spent in class, unless otherwise approved by the instructor; students are prohibited from engaging in any form of behavior that detracts from the learning experience of fellow students. Inappropriate behavior in the classroom may result in a request for the offending student to leave class.

Medical Insurance Coverage

The Affordable Act requires that all U. S. citizens and legal residents have medical insurance coverage. If accidental injury occurs, students are required to file a claim with their personal insurance company. The Hartford insurance policy, currently in place at Amarillo College, is an accident policy that provides coverage over and above any other valid and collectible insurance held by the student. 

 

Grading Criteria

  

Grading Criteria/Grade Scale:

The following criteria will be used to determine your grade:

  1. A-90, B-80-89, C-70-79, D-60-69, F- 59 and below.There will be no rounding of grades. Example: a 79.8 will a "C" and not a "B".
  2. NURSING LABS:  60% of the course grade will come from the Nursing Skills Competency Checklist grades. For satisfactory completion of any skill on the FIRST attempt, the student will receive 100 Points for that skill.  For satisfactory completion of any skill on the SECOND attempt, the student will receive 70 Points for that skill. For unsatisfactory completion of any skill after the second attempt, the student will fail the course. The student must have satisfactory completion of ALL skills to pass the course.  NOTE:  The student must be present for all graded skill labs unless an excused absence is approved by the course instructor.  If the student does not attend the graded skill lab without instructor approval, the student wil receive a grade of 70 for the FIRST attempt of the missed skill.
  3. Nursing Process Worksheets: 20% of the course grade will be determined from the completion of the Worksheets. Each worksheet must be satisfactorily completed and submitted on the due date of the corresponding Return Demonstration. If the Worksheet is not  satisfactorily completed and/or submitted, the student will not be allowed to demonstrate. This is considered the first attempt. The student must return with the satisfactorily completed worksheet, and well receive a grade of 70 for that worksheet and corresponding successful Return Demonstration as a second attempt.
  4. Clinical Skills Simulation:  20% of the course grade will come from the Clinical Skills Simulation Final.

Nursing Skill Make-up:

It is the student’s responsibility to reschedule a skills demonstration. The make-up (second) demonstration MUST be rescheduled within one (1) week and successfully demonstrated within two (2) weeks after the missed skill- whether from absence or unsuccessful first attempt.  The demonstration of a nursing skill procedure may be repeated only once.

\   Regular attendance is required. Less than 90% attendance may result in failure of the course.

  Course Requirements

  1. Meet all requirements for admission into the Associate Degree Nursing Program.
  2. Satisfactory completion of, or concurrent enrollment in:  BIOL 2401, PSYC 2301,Math (from approved list).
  3. Concurrent enrollment in RNSG1209 Introduction to Nursing is required.  Both courses (RNSG1209 and RNSG 1105) must be taken together. IF one has to be repeated, both must be repeated.
  4. Satisfactory grade of 70% or above on all nursing competencies plus a 70% or above combined course grade of Nursing Process Worksheets, nursing competencies, and Clinical Simulation Final.
  5. Classroom attendance of 90%.
  6. Successful completion of all the Nursing Process worksheets, nursing competencies, and the Clinical Simulation Final is a course requirement.
