Microsoft Access 2013 – As a CIS student, you can download a free copy of MS Access 2013 through Dreamspark.  You will be getting an email to your AmarilloCollege email account soon. The email will give you instructions on how to access your Dreamspark account to download the software. 

MyITLab Account – This semester, you will be given a free MyITLab account.  You will use this for your Microsoft Access 2013 homework.  Information on the account and MyITLab will be given during a class meeting.

Student Performance

  • Learn the elements of a database
  • Learn the purpose of a DBMS
  • Understand the functions of a database application
  • Learn the conceptual foundation of the relational model
  • Learn basic relational terminology
  • Learn the meaning and importance of different types of keys
  • Be able to model data using the Entity-Relational Model
  • Transform the Entity Relational data model into relational designs
  • Apply the normalization process
  • Know how to represent weak entities
  • Represent 1:1, 1:N and N:M binary relationships
  • Represent 1:1, 1:N and N:M recursive relationships
  • Learn SQL for creating database structures, adding data to a database, modifying and deleting data from a database, modifying and deleting tables and constraints
  • Learn SQL SELECT statements and options for processing single and multiple table queries and subqueries, and joins
  • Know basic administrative and managerial DBA functions
  • Understand the need for database administration including concurrency control, security, backup, recovery (reprocessing, rollback/rollforward)
  • Understand locking, deadlock, optimistic, pessimistic locking
  • Know how to improve database security

Expected Student Behavior

\ Students are expected to maintain a high standard of individual honor in their scholastic work.  Students who are guilty of cheating, plagiarism, copying, or dishonesty may be excluded from class with a grade of F; or, in flagrant cases, may be suspended from the College.  The faculty of the CIS Department reserves the right to ask a student to verify any portion of a test by reproducing any specific section or all of the test in question.

\ Any action that compromises the computer systems at Amarillo College , including but not limited to hacking or cracking, can result in a grade of “F” in this course and possible further disciplinary action.

Grading Criteria

Final grades will be assigned as indicated below:

A - Superior, Minimum of 90% average on exams and quizzes plus all homework turned in with a 90% average on that graded.

B - Good, Between 80% and 89.49% average on exams and quizzes plus all homework turned in with a minimum average of 80% on that graded.

C - Adequate, Between 70% and 79.49% average on all work.

D - Minimum, Between 60% and 69.49% average on all work.

F - Failing, Below 60% average on all work.

 

Except for the Final exam, All work is due on Sunday night 11:00 pm of the week assigned.  A 10 point penalty is given for all late work, except for the Final.  The Final may not be taken late.  The Final exam is due December 9 at 11:00 pm

  • Check your email daily and have assignments in on time. There are 4 mandatory class meetings.  Each meeting is worth 5% of your grade. Unless otherwise announced, these meetings will be held in Byrd room 215 (Think Tank).
