ELPT-1371-001 Overhead Distribution/Transmission Operations

Prerequisites

Prerequisite: LNWK 1301

Course Description

Examination of overhead distribution and transmission practices and operations. Topics include installation of suspension insulators from structures, rescue and install phases with hot sticks and work with hand line from pole or ground. Principles of transformers, meter loops, capacitors, regulators, reclosures and sectionalizers are covered.

Student Performance

After studying the material presented in this course of study, the student will be able to do the following, as evaluated by the faculty of the department/program:

1. Students will install different types of circuit protection devices and understand how they work.

2. Students will be introduced to all of the different types of metering systems.

3. Students will install and remove different types of overhead equipment from a bucket truck, and while climbing.

4. Students will learn about tree work in the electrical utility enviroment.

Expected Student Behavior

\ All pagers and cell phones must be turned off or in silent mode in the classroom setting and pagers and cell phones must be turned off while in labs or exams.

\ Food and drink may be allowed in the classroom setting, at the discretion of the instructor, but food and drink are not allowed in labs.

Grading Criteria

Final Exam =  30%

Labs = 40 %

Class Participation and Attendance = 10 %

Homework and Quizzes = 20 %            

A = 90 to 100; B = 80-89; C = 70-79; D = 60-69; F = Below 60

The opportunity to make-up an exam and/or lab will be determined by the circumstances of each individual, permitted at the discretion of the instructor.

The time and place for make-up test will be determined by the instructor.

Attendance

Attendance in class is regarded as requirement, and obligation for learning. Please remember the deadline for dropping a class at AC is posted online at www.actx.edu.  If you stop attending class and do not officially drop the course by the required deadline, you will receive an “F” for the course.

Students will be warned after one(1) unexcused absence and counseled by the instructor after two(2) absences.

Being tardy three (3) times will be considered one (1) absence.

Two(2) unexcused absences in any one semester may be cause for students to receive a failing grade for the course. Four(4) total absences(excused/or non-excused) will automatically result in the student dropping one(1) letter grade for the course.

It is the responsibility of the student to make up any work missed due to absences and to gain missed lecture notes through outside reading and/or note from classmates.

Make up examinations (and other assignments) will be permitted at the discretion of the instructor. The time and place for make-up test will be determined by the instructor.

If you are going to be late or absent, please notify the instructor as soon as possible.

Any student who leaves before or during the lab will not receive credit for that day's attendance.
