Course Description

Study of countries located in the Eastern Hemisphere including Europe, Asia, Africa, Middle East, Commonwealth of Independent States, Australia and New Zealand. Emphasis on the culture, customs, climate, physical features, language, currency, tourist and specific seasonal attractions.

1. The student will demonstrate knowledge of the Eastern Hemisphere and identify the most important travel destinations in each country and their map location. SCANS* Information C5, C6; Basic Skills F1; Thinking Skills F11.

2. The student will learn to recognize selling features and benefits of each country as a leisure and/or business destination, and identify these destinations in brochures and other reference material. SCANS* Information C5, C6; Resources C1; Basic Skills F1; Thinking Skills F10, F12.

3. The student will demonstrate the use of maps in conjunction with other reference material and list the relative locations of continents, oceans and seas. SCANS* Information C5; Basic Skills F1; Thinking Skills F10, F12.

4. The student will study the different time zones, identify local customs, language and courtesies of states and countries studied, and recognize the importance of fluctuating foreign currency. SCANS* Information C5; Thinking Skills F11.

5. The student will list key airports and describe the major climatic regions as they affect topography, cultures and travel. SCANS* Information C5; Basic Skills F6; Thinking Skills F12.

6. The student will discuss the relative importance of natural features and culture of each major region, country and destination. SCANS* Information C5; Basic Skills F6; Thinking Skills F11.

7. The student will describe the major topographical features of the Western Hemisphere and how they affect the travel industry. SCANS* Information C5; Basic Skills F6; Thinking Skills F10, F11.

8. The student will discuss how a single destination attraction or region can accommodate numerous interests for the traveler, describe typical passenger types traveling to a given destination, and identify a standard length of stay for a first time traveler to a specific destination. 9. The student will identify geography terms and concepts that are important for the travel and tourism student to know. SCANS* information C5; Thinking Skills F11.

The objective of the Travel Destination II - Eastern Hemisphere course is to give the student the opportunity to become familiar with tourist destinations in Europe, Asia, Africa, Middle East, Australia, and New Zealand. This course will give the student who intends to pursue Tourism as a career a way to identify destinations in a professional manner or to better understand the destination from a traveler`s point-of-view.

The final grade will be determined by the total number of points scored from all tests and assignments. The instructor reserves the right to subjectively influence the final grade relative to online work. 

Absence 
Students are expected to work and sign in to the online course each week in order to meet the assignments as outlined in the syllabus below. 

Exams
All tests must be taken and Final Paper must be submitted and be completed prior to the final week of classes in order to be averaged in the final grade. Any test not completed will be given a grade of F, Zero points. Each Exam will be comprised of 10 Questions. Each short answer will be worth 10 points for a possible 100. The Final will be a written paper submitted before the end of the semester and will receive equal weight on the final grade.     

Final Written Paper will consist of a submitted essay over a destination of your choice in the Eastern Hemisphere. The Final Paper will be averaged into the total grade point equally with all other required exams.  

 

Attendance

Assignments Students are expected to meet all requirements as outlined in the syllabus course calender. Students must log in and purchase the text prior to the second week of classes. The student must complete and submit the Personal Data Sheet by the second week of class.

Students should follow a rigorous schedule and work each week in this online course in order to complete successfully. 

Withdrawal policy
A student who fails to officially drop or withdraw from a course at the Registrar prior to the posted catalog deadline will receive a failing grade. It is the students responsibility to withdraw prior to the withdrawal date. Check the College Calendar to verify the correct drop date.

Week one

Log In to Online course. Purchase Text. Complete and submit Personal Data Sheet. Read Unit 1; Chapter 1 Geography for the Travel and Tourism Student. (If you have already purchased the digital text Travel Around the World download it in order to use it again).

Week two

Unit 5: Europe Read Chapters; 24 United Kingdom & Ireland; 25 France; 26 Italy. Answer the Review questions in each chapter to use as your Study Guide in preparation for Exam One.

Week three

Exam One will be available for the entire semester. Answer the questions with a short essay answer and submit your exam online for a grade. You will have unlimited opportunities to take the exam. The highest grade will be recorded.  

Week four

Read Chapters: 27 Spain and Portugal; 28 Germany; 29 Switzerland and Austria. Answer the Review questions in each chapter to use as your Study Guide in preparation for Exam Two. 

Week five

Exam Two will be available for the entire semester.  Answer the questions with a short essay answer and submit your exam online for a grade. You will have unlimited opportunities to take the exam. The highest grade will be recorded.  

Week six

Read Chapters: 30 The Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg; 31 Norway, Denmark, Finland and Sweden; 32 Russia and Ukraine; 33 Greece and Turkey; 34 Geofile. Answer the Review questions in each chapter to use as your Study Guide in preparation for Exam Three. The Geofile will not be on an exam.

Week seven

Exam Three will be available for the entire semester.  Answer the questions with a short essay answer and submit your exam online for a grade. You will have unlimited opportunities to take the exam. The highest grade will be recorded. 

Week eight

Unit Six: Africa. Read Chapters: 35 Egypt; 36 Morocco; 37 Kenya and Tanzania; 38 South Africa; 39 Geofile. Answer the Review questions in each chapter to use as your Study Guide in preparation for Exam Four. The Geofile will not be on an exam. 

Week nine

Exam Four will be available for the entire semester. Answer the questions with a short essay answer and submit your exam online for a grade. You will have unlimited opportunities to take the exam. The highest grade will be recorded. 

Week ten

Unit Seven: Asia. Read Chapters: 40 China; 41 Japan; 42 Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and Vietnam. Answer the Review questions in each chapter to use as your Study Guide in preparation for Exam Five. 

Week eleven

Exam five will be available for the entire semester.  Answer the questions with a short essay answer and submit your exam online for a grade. You will have unlimited uopportunities to take the exam. The highest grade will be recorded.  

Week twelve

Read Chapters: 43 India and Nepal; 44 Isreal and Jordan; 45 Asia Geofile. Answer the Review questions in each chapter to use as your Study Guide in preparation for Exam Six. The Geofile will not be on an exam. 

Week thirteen

Test Six will be available for the entire semester.  Answer the questions with a short essay answer and submit your exam online for a grade. You will have unlimited opportunities to take the exam. The highest grade will be recorded. 

Week fourteen

Unit Seven: Oceania. Read Chapters: 46 Austraila; 47 New Zealand; 48 French Polynesia, Fiji and the Cook Islands; 49 Geofile. Answer the Review questions in each chapter to use as your Study Guide in preparation for Exam Seven. The Geofile will not be on an exam. 

Week fifteen

Exam Seven will be available for the entire semester.  Answer the questions with a short essay answer and submit your exam online for a grade. You will have unlimited opportunities to take the exam.  The highest grade will be recorded. 

Week sixteen

Submit a Final Paper at any time during the semester. Choose a Destination in this Hemisphere. In an essay include an itinerary, activities, special areas of interest and why you would choose to visit this destination.
