Course Description

Anatomy and Physiology I is the first part of a two course sequence. It is a study of the structure and function of the human body including cells, tissues and organs of the following systems: integumentary, skeletal, muscular, nervous and special senses. Emphasis is on interrelationships among systems and regulation of physiological functions involved in maintaining homeostasis. The lab provides hands-on learning experience for exploration of human system components and basic physiology.

\ 1.Describe the different organizational levels, including anatomical terms, of the body from the chemical aspect and cells through systems.

\

\ 2. Describe the structure and function of the four primary tissue types.

\

\ 3. Identify and describe the integument system to also include functions of this system.

\

\ 4. Identify and describe  the components of the skeletal system.

\

\ 5. Identify and describe the types of bones and the histology of both cancellous and compact bone.

\

\ 6. Describe the various bones to include markings on the surface of bones, articulations, and attachments.

\

\ 7. Contrast the structure, kind of movement, and location of synarthrotic, amphiarthrotic, and diarthrotic joints.

\

\ 8. Identify and describe the characteristics and functions of muscle tissue, to include the structure and function of the neuromuscular junction.

\

\ 9. Describe the relationship between bones and skeletal muscle in producing body movements.

\

\ 10. Describe the complete oxidation of glucose via glycolysis, ccitric acid cycle, and the electron transport system.

\

\ 11. Distinguish between intracellular and extracellular fluid.

\

\ 12. Identify and describe the organization of the nervous system and give the components of each part, to include the histological characteristics and functions of the neuroglia and neurons.

\ 13. List the sequence of events involved in the generation and conduction of a nerve impulse.

\

\ 14. Describe the structure and functions of the spinal cord and the brain.

\

\ 15. Compare and contrast the peripheral nervous system and autonomic system, including reflexes.

Expected Student Behavior

Grievance Procedure:

If a student is having a problem with the course policies or the instructor, he or she should first try to resolve any such problems with the instructor.  If the problem is not resolved, the student may proceed to the Biology Department Chair (Dr. Claudie Biggers), the Acting Dean of STEM (Dr. Ferguson), the Associate Vice-President for Instruction (Dr. Vess), or the college President, (Dr. Russell Lowery-Hart), IN THAT ORDER.

Food and Drink:

You may bring food and drink into the lecture room, however, if you spill something please clean up after yourself.  I do not recommend any open food or beverage containers in the lab rooms.

Cell Phones

Cell phones are not prohibited; however, please be considerate of others.  Please keep all cell phones on silent or vibrate mode.  If it is essential that you answer the call please step outside the classroom to complete the call.  Absolutely no call shall be taken during a quiz, exam or lab practical.  This will result in a grade of zero on that quiz, exam, or lab practical.

Special Notes:

This syllabus is subject to change at the discretion of the instructor.  Material included is intended to provide an outline of the course and rules that the instructor will adhere to in evaluating the student's progress.  Students are expected to read the textbook before and after the material is presented in lecture.

Grading Criteria

Testing / Grading For The Semester

The total grade will be based upon both the lecture and the lab.  Students must have a combined score of 60% (600 points) or better in the lecture and the lab portions for a passing grade.

Lecture:

One half (50%) of the total grade for the semester as follows;

5 major exams consisting of multiple choice, matching, and/or labeling diagrams.  Each exam will be worth 100 points, with the four BEST exam scores used for a total value of 400 points maximum.

If you make less than  70 points on any major exam, you will be required to obtain 60 minutes of tutoring from the Science Enrichment Center prior to taking the next test.  You will not be allowed to take the next test until after I have verification that you have received this tutoring.

5-7 lecture quizzes consisting of 10 - 20 questions.  Each quiz will be worth 20 points, with the 5 best quiz scores used for a total value of 100 points maximum.

The lecture grade will total 500 points.

Laboratory:

One fourth (25%) of the total grade for the semester as follows;

Four (4) lab practicals consisting of 50 questions (fill in the blank and short answers).  Each lab practical is worth 50 points for a total value of 200 points.

5-7 Lab quizzes consisting of 10 - 20 questions.  Each quiz will be worth 10 points, with the  5 best quiz scores used for a total of 50 points.

The lab grade will total 250 points.

Final Exam:

One fourth (25%) of the total grade for the semester.

The final is a comprehensive exam consisting of multiple choice, matching, and / or labeling diagram questions.  This exam will be a minimum of 125 questions to a maximum of 200 questions.  The total value of the final will be 250 points.

Grading:

Grades will not be curved nor are extra credit assignments allowed / given.

900 - 1,000 points = A

800 - 899 points = B

700 - 799 points = C

600 - 699 points = D

599 points or less = F

Attendance

Regular attendance is necessary for satisfactory achievement.  Therefore, it is the responsibility of the student to attend class.  Attendance will be taken until the census day (February 3, 2016), after that date attendance will not be taken.

Science Testing Center

Warren Hall 112

All tests, excluding the Final Exam, will be taken in the Science Testing Center and may be taken during the normal Science Testing Center hours, day or evening.  Tests will be taken outside of class lecture time, and you will have a 48 - 72 hour window to take the tests.  Please note: No tests will be given out less than one and a half hours be the Science Testing Center closes.  You must present an Amarillo College student ID every time you take a test.  The Science Testing Center staff will retain your ID while you take your test and it will be returned to you when you turn in your test.

When using the Science Testing Center students should scan in and out with their Amarillo College student I. D.

Mandatory Tutoring:

In an effort to increase retention in Biology courses, any student who scores below 70 on any exam (excluding the Final Exam) must complete a mandatory 60 minute tutoring session with his / her instructor or in the Science Enrichment Center before taking the next exam.

Appointments for the 60 minute tutoring are required and may be scheduled in the Science Enrichment Center or by calling 806-371-5536.

A record of tutoring form will be given to you when you complete 60 minutes of required tutoring.  You will not be allowed to take the next exam without the completed record of tutoring form.

 

Free Drop-in:

Peer tutors are available in the Science Enrichment Center.

 

Cheating:

Cheating will not be tolerated in any Biology course at Amarillo College.  On the first day of class, you will be required to sign and date a Course Contract.  Included in the contract is the following statement: “I fully understand that if I cheat, or attempt to cheat, on any test I will receive an automatic “F” in the course.  This grade will go on my permanent transcript and cannot be removed.  Cheating includes, but is not limited to” the illegal use of books, notes, cell phones*, copying or leaving the Science Testing Center with a test or questions from a test.  Cheating also includes helping, or attempting to help, other students to cheat on a test.”

You will not be allowed to take your tests in the Science Testing Center until this contract is signed and on file in the Science Testing Center.

*Please note: NO CELL PHONES is the Testing Room.  If we see your cell phone out AT ANY TIME, FOR ANY REASON, while in the testing room, YOU WILL RECEIVE an “F” for the course

STC Contract for Success

_______Please Note: Cell phones or any other electronic devises are NOT allowed in the testing room at any time for any reason. If we see any electronic devises out AT ANY TIME, FOR ANY REASON, while in the testing room, your test WILL be taken up immediately and may result in an “F” for the course.

Science Testing Center RULES

  • Books and personal items must be placed on the bookshelf before you take your test but, remember, Amarillo College is not responsible for lost or stolen items.
    • Items are better left at home or at another safe location.
  • To take a test, fill out a “Test Request” slip.
  • An Amarillo College picture ID is required in order to take or view any test in the Science Testing Center. 
  • No unapproved scratch paper is allowed for testing. You may use the back of the test or scratch paper from the STC to show your extra work.  Once you have begun work on a test that is considered one attempt. You cannot leave the Science Testing Center and return to finish that test at a later time.
  • In the testing room, please do not sit by someone with the same colored test.
  • The Science Testing Center will not give any tests out later than 1.5 hours before closing.
  • The Science Testing Center personnel will pick up your test five minutes prior to closing time.
  • Tests may not be taken out of the Science Testing Center.
  • The Science Testing Center hours are posted on the outside door, in your syllabus, and Science Testing Center. 
  • Please come prepared. If you do not have a pencil, you may purchase one from the Science Testing Center for 25 cents.  Please bring exact change. Pens are not allowed on any scantron.
  • Children may not accompany students into testing room or be left unattended anywhere on campus.
  • CELL PHONE CALCULATORS or any other non-approved calculators ARE NOT ALLOWED in the testing area. Cell phones placed on the bookshelf must be turned off.
  • Students will have to wait for their test results from their instructor.

I have read and understand all of the above rules and requirements. Any violation of any of the above outlined rules or requirements will result in an immediate seizure of my test along from the Science Testing Center, which will result in further disciplinary actions and possible “F” for my course.

A grade of W will be given for a student initiated drop or withdrawal on or before April 21, 2016. You may not drop or withdraw after Thursday, April 21, 2016 without permission of the Biology Department.  You must petition the department, in writing, for review of a late withdrawal.  This request will be reviewed by the entire full time faculty of the Biology Department.
