Course Description

Anatomy and Physiology II is the second part of a two-course sequence. It is a study of the structure and function of the human body including the following systems: endocrine, cardiovascular, immune, lymphatic, respiratory, digestive (including nutrition), urinary (including fluid and electrolyte balance) and reproductive (including human development and genetics). Emphasis is on interrelationships among systems and regulation of physiological functions involved in maintaining homeostasis. The lab provides a hands-on learning experience for exploration of human system components and basic physiology.

\ (Minimum competencies) After studying the material presented in this course of study, the student will be able to do the following as evaluated by the faculty in the department/program.

\ 1. Describe each endocrine gland and its hormones including actions, regulation, and disorders.

\

\ 2. Define the principal physical characteristics of blood and its functions in the body.

\

\ 3. Identify and describe the structure of the heart and the functions of each part to include the flow of blood through the heart and the body.

\

\ 4. Describe the principal events of the cardiac cycle and cardiac output.

\

\ 5. Contrast the structure and function of arteries, arterioles, capillaries, venules, and veins.

\

\ 6. Identify and describe the functions and components of the lymphatic system.

\

\ 7. Identify and describe the structure and functions of the organs of the respiratory system, to include the events inolved in inspiration and expiration.

\

\ 8. Identify and describe the structure and function of the digestive system, and distinguish between the chemical and mechanical phases.

\

\ 9. Identify and describe the structure and functions of the organs of the urinary system.

\

\ 10. Describe the process of urine formation and its physical characteristics and normal chemical components.

\

\ 11. Explain the structure, histology, and functions of the organs of the reproductive system.

\

\ 12. Explain and describe the events associated with pregnancy.

\

\ 13. Identify and describe the basic anatomy and physiology involved in the special senses.

\

\ By the end of the semester, the student will be able to satisfactorily complete the listed learning objectives with a minimum of 60% competency level based upon grades from the above indicated examinations.

Expected Student Behavior

Grievance Procedure:  If a student is having a problem with the course policies, or with the instructor, he or she should first try to resolve any such problems with the instructor.  If the problem is not resolved, the student may proceed to the Biology Department Chairman (Dr. Claudie Biggers),  the Acting  Dean of STEM (Dr. Ferguson), the Associate Vice-President for Instruction (Dr. Vess), or the college President (Dr. Lowery-Hart), IN THAT ORDER.

 

Cell phones:  Cell phones are not prohibited, however, please be considerate of others.  Please keep all cell phones on silent or vibrate mode.  If it is essential that you answer the call, please step outside the classroom to complete the call.  Absolutely no call shall be taken during a quiz, exam, or practical.  This will result in a grade of zero on that quiz, exam, or practical.

Plagiarism / Academic Dishonesty:  Academic dishonesty or plagiarism will not be tolerated in this class. Students caught cheating on a quiz, exam, or lab practical will be given a grade of zero on that assignment and referred to the Dean of Student Services (Mr. Robert Austin).

Special Notes:

This syllabus is subject to change at the discretion of the instructor.  Material inlcuded is intended to provide an outline of the course and rules that the instructor will adhere to in evaluating student's progress.  Student's are expected to read the textbook before and after the material is presented in the lectures.

 

Grading Criteria

A = 900 - 1,000 points, B = 800 - 899 points, C = 700 -799 points, D = 600 - 699 points, F = < 600 points

Lecture 50%, (500 points) and will include the following:

1. Six lecture exams, each worth 80 points.  One lecture exam will be dropped.  Total value of lecture exams will be 400 points.

2. 5-7 lecture quizzes, each worth 20 points.  One lecture quiz will be dropped.  Total value of lecture quizzes will be 100 points.

Laboratory 25%, (250 points) and will include the following:

1. Three lab practicals, each worth 50 points for a total value of 150 points.

2. 5-7 lab quizzes, each worth 10 points.  One lab quiz will be dropped.  Total value of lab quizzes will be 50 points.

3. 5-7 case studies, each worth 10 points.  Once case study will be dropped.  Total value of case studies will be 50 points.

Final exam 25% (250 points).  Final exam will be a minimum of 150 questions to a maximum of 200 questions and will be comprehensive.

No make-ups will be allowed.  Extenuating circumstances will be reviewed on an individual basis.  One lecture exam, one lecture quiz, and one lab quiz will be dropped.

Attendance

 

Regular attendance is necessary for satisfactory achievement.  Therefore, it is the responsibility of the student to attend class.  Attendance will be taken until the census day (February 3, 2016), after that date attendance will not be taken.

A grade of W will be given for a student-initiated drop or withdrawal on or before April 21, 2016.  You may not drop or withdraw after April 21, 2016, without permission of the Biology Department.  You must petition the department, in writing, for evaluation of a late withdrawal.  This will be reviewed by the full-time faculty of the Biology Department.

Science Testing Center

All tests, excluding the Final Exam, will be taken in the Science Testing Center and may be taken during the normal Science Testing Center hours, day or evening.  Tests will be taken outside of class lecture time, and you will have a 72 hour window to take the tests.  Please note: No tests will be given out less than one and a half hours be the Science Testing Center closes.  You must present an Amarillo College student ID every time you take a test.  The Science Testing Center staff will retain your ID while you take your test and it will be returned to you when you turn in your test.

When using the Science Testing Center students should scan in and out with their Amarillo College student I. D.

Mandatory Tutoring:

In an effort to increase retention in Biology courses, any student who scores below 70 on any exam (excluding the Final Exam) must complete a mandatory 60 minute tutoring session with his / her instructor or in the Science Enrichment Center before taking the next exam.

Appointments for the 60 minute tutoring are required and may be scheduled in the Science Enrichment Center or by calling 806-371-5536.

A record of tutoring form will be given to you when you complete 60 minutes of required tutoring.  You will not be allowed to take the next exam without the completed record of tutoring form.

 

Free Drop-in:

Peer tutors are available in the Science Enrichment Center.

 

Cheating:

Cheating will not be tolerated in any Biology course at Amarillo College.  On the first day of class, you will be required to sign and date a Course Contract.  Included in the contract is the following statement: “I fully understand that if I cheat, or attempt to cheat, on any test I will receive an automatic “F” in the course.  This grade will go on my permanent transcript and cannot be removed.  Cheating includes, but is not limited to” the illegal use of books, notes, cell phones*, copying or leaving the Science Testing Center with a test or questions from a test.  Cheating also includes helping, or attempting to help, other students to cheat on a test.”

You will not be allowed to take your tests in the Science Testing Center until this contract is signed and on file in the Science Testing Center.

*Please note: NO CELL PHONES is the Testing Room.  If we see your cell phone out AT ANY TIME, FOR ANY REASON, while in the testing room, YOU WILL RECEIVE an “F” for the course

STC Contract for Success

Cheating includes but is not limited to: the illegal use of books, notes, copying or photographing any test material, leaving the Science Testing Center with a test, and the use of any electronic devices such as unapproved calculators, cell phones, smart watches, laptops, tablets, etc. Cheating also includes helping or attempting to help other students to cheat on a test.

_______Please Note: Cell phones or any other electronic devises are NOT allowed in the testing room at any time for any reason. If we see any electronic devises out AT ANY TIME, FOR ANY REASON, while in the testing room, your test WILL be taken up immediately and may result in an “F” for the course.

Science Testing Center RULES

  • Books and personal items must be placed on the bookshelf before you take your test but, remember, Amarillo College is not responsible for lost or stolen items.
    • Items are better left at home or at another safe location.
  • To take a test, fill out a “Test Request” slip.
  • An Amarillo College picture ID is required in order to take or view any test in the Science Testing Center. 
  • No unapproved scratch paper is allowed for testing. You may use the back of the test or scratch paper from the STC to show your extra work.  Once you have begun work on a test that is considered one attempt. You cannot leave the Science Testing Center and return to finish that test at a later time.
  • In the testing room, please do not sit by someone with the same colored test.
  • The Science Testing Center will not give any tests out later than 1.5 hours before closing.
  • The Science Testing Center personnel will pick up your test five minutes prior to closing time.
  • Tests may not be taken out of the Science Testing Center.
  • The Science Testing Center hours are posted on the outside door, in your syllabus, and Science Testing Center. 
  • Please come prepared. If you do not have a pencil, you may purchase one from the Science Testing Center for 25 cents.  Please bring exact change. Pens are not allowed on any scantron.
  • Children may not accompany students into testing room or be left unattended anywhere on campus.
  • CELL PHONE CALCULATORS or any other non-approved calculators ARE NOT ALLOWED in the testing area. Cell phones placed on the bookshelf must be turned off.
  • Students will have to wait for their test results from their instructor.

I have read and understand all of the above rules and requirements. Any violation of any of the above outlined rules or requirements will result in an immediate seizure of my test along from the Science Testing Center, which will result in further disciplinary actions and possible “F” for my course.
