Separation of Roles:

In response Texas Administrative Code, Title 25, Part 1, Chapter 157, Subchapter C, Rule §157.36, students MUST NEVER attempt to gain clinical experience outside an EMSP assigned clinical shift.  At no time, while gaining clinical experience, may a student be considered operational staff or crew - paid or otherwise.

Navigate 2 Premier Access is an online resource that provides students with interactive activities designated to enhance learning!  It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that at the beginning of each class session, every chapter’s “Lecture:  Chapter...” assignment is completed as well as any other resources available for that chapter.  A minimum grade of 80% is recommended before taking any exams in this class.

Student success will be assessed in 3 learning domains.  Failure of any ONE domain constitutes failure of the ENTIRE class.

The skills examination forms are on Blackboard under EMSP-1163 for study, practice, and evaluation.  Students are expected to complete skills examinations on the date scheduled.  Failure to bring the required skills sheets constitutes a failure of that skill.

If a student misses a skills exam, they will be required to make up that skill on the West Campus at a date and time chosen by the instructor.  If that date and time does not fit the student’s schedule, a grade of “F” will be awarded for BOTH EMSP-1501 AND EMSP-1163.

The clinical (EMSP-1163) letter grade will be the same as EMSP-1501 classroom, final average - provided the clinical rotations are successfully completed as evaluated by the EMSP program faculty and the clinicians assigned for each clinical shift.  Failure to successfully complete the clinical course also constitutes failure of the classroom (EMSP-1501) course.

Chapter Objectives:

Students will be expected to complete each of the Knowledge Objectives listed at the beginning of each chapter throughout the semester.  These objectives MUST be typed according to the approved format and turned in on the day the chapter will be discussed AND on exam days.  All objectives will be GRADED on EXAM DAYS ONLY.  If absent, the student must turn in their objectives COMPLETED on the day they return to class.  Objectives CANNOT be e-mailed to the instructor.

TEN (10) points will be deducted from the grade if the objectives are not turned in on the day the chapter is discussed.  If objectives are not COMPLETED and turned in on the day the student returns to class following an absence, TEN (10) points will be deducted from the grade for that particular chapter.

AMARILLO COLLEGE CANYON ISD

If objectives are not turned in on the day of an exam, a grade of “0” will be given for all objectives tested on that exam.

Objectives will count 2% of the final average.

If objectives are turned in late for any reason, the highest grade a student will receive for their objectives will be a “70”.  The high school instructor, at their discretion, may drop the lowest objective grade during each six week period.

Objectives will count ONCE in the high school grade book.

Quizzes will count ONCE in the high school grade book.

Exams:

Throughout the semester, a total of 11 exams and a comprehensive final exam will be administered as outlined on the course calendar attached to this syllabus.  See the Make-Up Policy below in the event that an exam is missed.

AMARILLO COLLEGE CANYON ISD

Exams will count 50% of the final average.

Exams will count TWICE in the high school grade book.

Final Exam:

The final exam will cover everything taught in the class and be a good representation of the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians' Emergency Medical Technician certification cognitive examination.

AMARILLO COLLEGE CANYON ISD

Final Exam will count 38% of the final average.

Final Exam will count TWICE in the high school grade book.

Make-Up Policy:

A student who will not complete any exam on the scheduled day must contact the instructor before the scheduled exam.  If the absence is excused, the exam must be take when the student returns to class either on the high school campus during class or after 5:30 pm on the Amarillo College West Campus.  Students are encouraged to complete any quiz or exam before an absence if at all possible.  A grade of "0" for that exam will be averaged if this policy is not followed.

National Incident Management System (NIMS) Courses:

Students are required to complete two NIMS courses online on their own time.  These courses are free and are provided through FEMA.  Print each course certificate and bring to your instructor.  Failure to complete one or both of these courses by the assigned due date will result in 50 points being deducted from the final exam.  The links for each course is:

Attendance

Regular attendance is mandatory for satisfactory achievement.  It is the student’s responsibility to attend each class.  Quizzes and examinations will be administered at the beginning of class and will NOT be passed out late and cannot be made up if missed (please see the Grading and Make-Up policies for more information).

NO MORE THAN 10 CLASS SESSIONS MAY BE MISSED.  IF THE STUDENT MISSES MORE THAN 10 CLASS SESSIONS, THEY WILL BE ADVISED TO WITHDRAW FROM THE COURSE OR RECEIVE A GRADE OF "F" IN BOTH EMSP-1501 AND EMSP-1163.

Clinical shifts are selected from a scheduling website owned and operated by FISDAP (http://www.fisdap.net), costing approximately $15.00.  After a student is given access to the FISDAP site, clinical shifts MUST be chosen and completed as expeditiously as possible.  Attempting to choose a schedule late in the semester will likely result in an inability to create an appropriate schedule.  Failure to successfully complete clinical rotations will result in a grade of “F” in BOTH EMSP-1501 AND EMSP-1163.
