MUSI-1303-002 Fundamentals of Music

Prerequisites

Course Description

Introduction to the basic elements of music theory for non-music majors: scales, intervals, keys, triads, elementary ear training, keyboard harmony, notation, meter, and rhythm. (Does not apply to a music major degree.)

The National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) and the Performing Arts Medicine Association (PAMA) have developed a comprehensive overview of neuromusculoskeletal, vocal and hearing health issues for postsecondary schools and departments of music.  Information of a medical nature is provided by PAMA; information regarding contextual issues in music programs, by NASM. The following links address the risk of noise-induced hearing loss, neuromusculoskeletal and vocal injury—all of which are widespread and serious public health issues for musicians and others.

Students are expected to:

  • attend each class meeting
  • be on time for class
  • participate in discussions
  • turn in all homework by specified deadline
  • use on-line resources presented in class

Grading Criteria

The final grade will be based on the following:

  • Weekly grade, based on completion of homework assignments (10 points) and attendance/participation (10 points):  20 points per week, 300 points total for semester
  • Mid-term exam:  100 points total
  • Rhythm project:  100 points total
  • Final Exam:  100 points total

There is a total of 600 possible points for the semester.

Attendance

Regular attendance is expected and required.  Students will lose 5 points in the participation grade for each class missed.

Weekly Schedule:

Week 1: Introduction to the piano keyboard

Week 2:  Keyboard; names of notes on staff

Week 3:  Whole Steps and Half Steps; introduction to scales

Week 4:  Scales, continued

Week 5:  Key Signatures; Rhythm, note values, meter

Week 6:  Rhythm, note values, meter continued; Intervals

Week 7:  Practice Mid-Term exam; discuss Rhythm Project assignment

Week 8:  Intervals continued; review for mid-term exam.   Mid-term exam on Wednesday

Week 9:  Rhythm Project demonstration.  Also discuss “melody”

Week 10:  Work on rhythm project in class; ear training

Week 11:  Triads; Rhythm Project

Week 12:  Triads, continued

Week 13:  Rhythm Project performances, 1st and 2nd rounds

Week 14:  Rhythm Project, 3rd round,  on Monday; 7th chords on Wednesday

Week 15:  Triad Review; 7th chord review, ear training

Week 16:  Final exam

Additional Information

It is extremely beneficial for students in Fundamentals of Music to have access to a piano keyboard.  There are practice pianos available in the basement of the Concert Hall Theater, as well as in Classroom 203, the Piano Lab.

Beginning the first day of class, all students enrolled in Fundamentals of Music will have access to the following website:

which will have useful drills for learning materials discussed in class.
