A study of drugs that affect cardiopulmonary systems. Emphasis on classification, route of administration, dosages/calculations and physiological interactions.

Supplies

Students must have a laptop computer with reliable Internet access when completing online exams. Smartphones and tablets are not reliable for use with exams.

Student Performance

End-of-Course Outcomes: Explain the mode of action, clinical indications, dosages, hazards, and side effects of pulmonary and cardiovascular drugs; calculate drug dosages; and select drugs for optimal therapeutic benefits.

  1. Describe the FDA's drug approval process.
  2. Discuss the various phases of the interactions between pharmacologic agents and the human body.
  3. Demonstrate proficiency in drug dosage calculations.
  4. List and describe the indications, contraindications, hazards and side effects of the pharmacologic agents presented in class.

Grading Criteria

The final grade for this course is based on the following:

  1. Three (3) major exams (100 points each for a total of 300 points)
  2. Two (2) quizzes and/or activities (25 points each for a total of 50 points)
  3. Eight (8) written assignments (12.5 points each for a total of 100 points)

Activities for each lesson must be completed before the corresponding class meeting.  Any lesson not completed on time will be scored as zeros without exception.

Quizzes will be given at the beginning of class.  If you are not on time, you will miss the quiz and receive a zero. 

Weekly written assignments are to be turned in before the corresponding class meeting. Any written assignment not completed on time will be scored as zero without exception.

Class attendance, participation and attitude may be used by the instructor to subjectively influence final grades.

The number of points earned by a student will be divided by the maximum possible points for the course.  The result will be expressed as a percent and converted to a final letter grade.  The grading scale for this course is:

A = 90-100 (450-405 points)
B = 80-89 (404-360 points)
C = 70-75 (359-337.5 points)
F = less than 75 (less than 337.5 points)

There will be no extra credit offered in this course.

 

 

Attendance

Regular attendance at class meetings is necessary for satisfactory achievement.  In the event of an unavoidable absence, it is the responsibility of the student to obtain missed lecture notes from classmates.
