The National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) and the Performing Arts Medicine Association (PAMA) have developed a comprehensive overview of neuromusculoskeletal, vocal and hearing health issues for postsecondary schools and departments of music.  Information of a medical nature is provided by PAMA; information regarding contextual issues in music programs, by NASM. The following links address the risk of noise-induced hearing loss, neuromusculoskeletal and vocal injury—all of which are widespread and serious public health issues for musicians and others.

Student Performance

\ DESCRIPTION OF COURSE: One hour seminar per week on topics of importance to the musician. Attendance required at specific number of fine arts activities. Class periods are designed to present various topics of interest to the music major by AC Music Faculty and special guests from the Amarillo Symphony and Amarillo Opera. Three class periods will be designated for Symphony Informances, in which guest artists performing with the Amarillo Symphony will present informal discussions related to their careers and the music they will perform with ASO. In addition, some class periods will be designated for student recitals.

\ STUDENT PERFORMANCE/LEARNING OUTCOMES: The primary objective of this course is to help students fulfill music department requirements for recital and concert attendance. The secondary objective is to strengthen student's musical intellect regarding style periods through listening assignments in the Division of Fine Arts Media Center. After completion of the semester, the student will:

\ 1. Attend a minimum of 10 fine arts concerts outside of class and keep all programs as proof of attendance.

\ 2. Be able to find recordings relevant to their performance major and others in the Division of Fine Arts Media Center and complete listening worksheets.

\ 3. Be exposed to topics relevant to the music major, as presented by faculty and guest artist from the Amarillo Symphony and Amarillo Opera.

If you are an active staff or faculty member according to Human Resources, use "Exchange". All other students, use "AC Connect (Google) Email".

Expected Student Behavior

\ 1. Attend every class period.

\ 2. Prepare questions for guest from the symphony and be prepared to ask and answer questions.

\ 3. Attend a minimum of 10 concerts/fine arts events

Grading Criteria

\ This is a pass/fail class.� Students must have a minimum of 10 concerts attended to pass.   Extra concerts will be added for every class period missed.

\ CONCERT ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENT: You are required by the music department to attend a minimum of 10 fine arts performances. You may count 1 concert for each performing group of which you are a member, with a limit of 4 concerts. In other words, if you are a member of 4 performing groups, you may count 4 concerts towards your fine arts requirement (3 groups - 3 concerts, etc.). At least three of the performances must be related to your major. The other performances are your choice. Please save all programs for proof of attendance. Please type out concerts attended on a cover sheet and attach with your programs. A minimum of 5 attended concerts are due by midterm and the remainder are due on the last class day . �A grade of F will be given for failure to attend the minimum ten concerts and failure to provide ten programs. A grade of incomplete will not be offered!!!

\ ATTENDANCE POLICY: Regular attendance is necessary for satisfactory achievement. Therefore, it is the responsibility of the student to attend class. Students are expected to attend every class unless excused by the professor with written documentation. Don't be late for class, especially on symphony informance days, and prepare several questions!!!

\ An extra concert will be required for each class period missed for any reason.
