Course Description

Smaller choral groups performing various styles of music depending upon the particular ensemble, such as vocal jazz, men's chorus, chamber ensemble, etc.

The National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) and the Performing Arts Medicine Association (PAMA) have developed a comprehensive overview of neuromusculoskeletal, vocal and hearing health issues for postsecondary schools and departments of music.  Information of a medical nature is provided by PAMA; information regarding contextual issues in music programs, by NASM. The following links address the risk of noise-induced hearing loss, neuromusculoskeletal and vocal injury—all of which are widespread and serious public health issues for musicians and others.

\ 1. MUSIC: All music will be provided by Amarillo College. You will be held financially responsible for lost, damaged, or stolen music. DON'T LOSE IT!!!!!!!! All music must be returned after the final concert.

Student Performance

\ AC Vocal Jazz is a 6-8 voice vocal ensemble who performs contemporary vocal jazz literature, such as those performed by The Real Group, New York Voices, The Ritz, Singer's Unlimited, The PM Singers, Take 6, and others. This groups performs with microphones, but without the type of choreography similar to a show choir. The choir will perform for special functions in the community and possibly at local high schools.

\ STUDENT PERFORMANCE/LEARNING OUTCOMES: The goal of this course is to have fun singing and performing vocal jazz literature, and to share this experience with each other and our audience. After completion of the semester, the student will:

\

\ 1. Learn vocal fundamentals and improve their singing through increasing vocal flexibility.

\

\ 2. Learn the listening skills required to sing tight harmonies with proper blend and balance.

\

\ 3. Increased their knowledge of jazz literature and style.

\

\ 4. Learn to perform this style visually as well as aurally.

\

\ 5. Learn how to use a microphone and how to enhance the voice electronically.

\

\ 6. Learn to improvise, scat.

\

\ 7. Have performed concerts in Amarillo High Schools and the community.

\

\ 8. Meet new people and experience a bond of friendship with each other.

Expected Student Behavior

1. Attend all rehearsals and performances

2. Work on parts and assigned scat outside of class

3. Listen to vocal jazz recordings

4. Have a positive attitude and support each other

5. Listen to each other in rehearsals/performances

6. Work hard

7. NO cell phone use of any kind is permitted unless used as a class tool by permission of the professor.

Grading Criteria

Grades will be determined by class work and progress on assignments outside of class.   A grade of "F" will be given to students who miss a performance.  Performance grade will be given each week.  Grading schema is consistent with the Blackboard grading schema (89.5-100 = A, 79.5-89.4 = B, etc.)

Attendance

\ ATTENDANCE POLICY: Regular attendance is necessary for satisfactory achievement. Therefore, it is the responsibility of the student to attend class. Especially joining a small group requires commitment and responsibility from EACH member. You are expected to attend every rehearsal. NO EXCUSES WILL BE PERMITTED FOR CONCERT DATES, with the exception of family tragedy or emergency. Please call when you must miss a rehearsal for any reason.
