PHYS-2373-001 Integrated Earth Science

Prerequisites

Prerequisite: RDNG 0331-minimum grade of C or a score on a state-approved test indicating college-level reading skills

Course Description

Preparation for elementary and middle school teachers of science to supplement science knowledge and increase confidence levels of science instruction. Hands-on activities and survey of topics in earth systems, atoms, minerals, rocks, plate tectonics, volcanism, planets and the universe. Interaction of systems will include the integration of the atmosphere, oceans and earth resources.

Student Performance

\ Purpose and Goals of the Course:By the end of the semester the student should be able to complete the listed objectives with a minimum of 60% competency level based on the grading procedure for the course.

\ 1.  Understand and be able to summarize the scope and main features of each of the branches of Earth Science, i.e., geology, meteorology, oceanography, and astronomy.

\

\ 2.  Understand and be able to summarize the principle components of the concept that the Earth is an interacting set of physical and chemical systems and how these limit and benefit the activities of man.

\

\ 3.  Understand and be able to summarize the major changes the earth has undergone in the last 4.5 billion years.

Expected Student Behavior

\ Cell phones are not to out during class unless okayed by the instructor. Any use of a cell phone or other device during a test or quiz will result in immediate forfeiture of the quiz/exam and a zero grade.

\

\ Quizzes will be given at the beginning of the class period, you must be on time for the quiz. If you are not present when the quiz is handed out, you will not be allowed to take the quiz and will receive a zero for that quiz.

\

\ During exams, you are expected to be on time. Once the first test has been turned in, no tests will be handed out to anyone late for class.

Homework: Homework is due at the beginning of class. Homework not turned in at that time will be considered late and will not be accepted. Assignments can be turned in early by email or through AConline.

Quizzes will also be given at the beginning of the class; if you are not there when the quiz starts you will not be allowed to take the quiz. Therefore it is in your best interest to ensure that you are in class on time.

The overall course grade will be according to the following percentages:

A   90 - 100 %
\ B   80 - 89.99 %
\ C  70 - 79.99 %
\ D  60 - 69.99 %
\ F - Below 60 %

There will be no extra credit assignments. If you have a question about a grade, you have two weeks from the date that the grade is posted to ask for a review. After that two weeks the grade will be permanent.

Attendance

\ Class attendance is mandatory with attendance monitored by class roll and pop quizzes. There will be no makeups for missed homework, quizzes, labs, or tests unless prior arrangements have been made at least 24 hours in advance.

Reading the Text: It is vital that you read the text BEFORE the lecture on that chapter. This will greatly improve your understanding of the topic and therefore your grade. As there is a large amount of material to cover in this class, the more times you see the material the more you will retain.
