Prerequisites: RNSG 1247, RNSG 1151 and RNSG 2101 Corequisite: RNSG 2261

Course Description

Integration of previous knowledge and skills into the continued development of the professional nurse as a provider of patient-centered care, patient safety advocate, member of health care team and member of the profession. Emphasis on clinical decision-making for clients in medical-surgical settings experiencing health problems involving gastrointestinal disorders, endocrine and metabolic disorders, reproductive and sexual disorders, musculoskeletal disorders, eye-ear-nose-throat disorders and integumentary disorders. Discussion of knowledge, judgment, skills and professional values within a legal/ethical framework. This course lends itself to a blocked approach.

STUDENT PERFORMANCE/LEARNING OUTCOMES:
The student will utilize critical thinking and a systematic problem-solving process as a framework for providing care for clients in structured healthcare settings; and integrate the roles of the associate degree nursing in the provision of care for clients and families
 

COURSE OUTCOMES:

  1. Discuss an ethical-legal framework and applicable professional standards and requirements in caring for adults with advanced medical surgical health problems.
  2. Describe own personal and professional development in the role of the advanced medical surgical nurse.
  3. Identify activities that promote the development and practice of professional nursing as an advanced medical surgical nurse.

 

Provider of Patient-Centered Care:

  1. Summarize the role of the professional nurse in the promotion, maintenance, and restoration of health of adult patients with advanced medical surgical health problems.
  2. Utilize a systematic process and clinical reasoning to plan holistic patient-centered care for adult patients with advanced medical surgical health problems.
  3. Explain nursing concepts specific to meeting unique psychosocial and spiritual needs of adult patients with advanced medical surgical health problems.
  4. Outline the principles of health teaching in the care of adult patients with advanced medical surgical health problems.
  5. Identify basic nursing and advanced nursing skills used in the care of adult patients with advanced medical surgical health problems.
  6. Discuss compassionate behaviors and appropriate communication skills used in the care of diverse adult patients with advanced medical surgical health problems.
  7. Identify community resources in meeting the needs of adult patients with advanced medical surgical health problems.

  1. Analyze evidence-based practice data with patient-centered data to promote safety and quality in care of the advanced medical surgical patient.
  2. Identify governmental and organizational requirements and professional standards and requirements to patient safety situations on medical surgical units.

  1. Describe strategies to effectively work with other disciplines to provide holistic patient-centered care to adult patients with advanced medical surgical health problems.

Expected Student Behavior

 BEHAVIORAL EXPECTATIONS AND CLASSROOM GROUND RULES:
1. Students are full partners in fostering a classroom environment which is conducive to learning. In order to assure that all students have the opportunity to gain from time spent in class, unless otherwise approved by the instructor; students are prohibited from engaging in any form of behavior that detracts from the learning experience of fellow students. Inappropriate behavior in the classroom may result in a request from the instructor for the offending student to leave the class.

  1. You will have preparation to complete for each content area.  You must do your preparation and bring it to class with you on the day we discuss that content area.  If you fail to bring your preparation to class, you will be required to leave class and complete your preparation in the lobby.
     

Grading Criteria

The following criteria will be used to determine the course grade:

1.         A=90-100, B=80-89.999, C=75-79.999, D=60-74.999, F=below 60. No grades      will be             rounded. For example, a grade of 79.7 will be a “C” and not rounded to        “80” (B).

2.         Three major examinations = 60% of course grade.If a student scores less than 75 on a major examination, the student will be required to attend tutoring.  The student will receive a prescription form for tutoring, will have to attend the required session, have prescription form signed, and return the form to the instructor.  If the student fails to attend prescribed tutoring, the student will not be allowed to take the next major examination and will receive a zero (0) for that examination.  A grade of zero on an examination will lead to failure of the course.

3.         Conceptual term paper = 10% of course grade.

4.         10 Case Studies as a course requirement

5.         Five Practice Blackboard quizzes as a course requirement.

 

6.         One Evolve medical surgical specialty examination will be administered during      the semester.

7.         The Evolve Specialty Exam is 5% of the total class grade. The conversion   score    (%) will used as the grade for the exam.

8.         A remediation plan is sent to students by Evolve after the specialty exam.

9.         All students must access the on-line remediation through HESI Assessment after   the course’s Evolve Specialty or Custom Exam. All students will develop an      individualized study packet, and review all areas designated as needing             improvement. Completion of remediation and development of a study packet is     due by the Friday before the final exam. If it is not completed as assigned, then            the student will fail the course because of a failure to complete this requirement.

10.       The Final Exam is 25% of the course grade. All students are required to take the    Final Exam.

11.       Make-up examinations are to taken within one-week (prior to the next class            meeting) if a regularly scheduled examination is missed. Make-up examinations      will be administered to students who arrive late to a regularly scheduled     examination time or who fail to present a valid identification. Make-up       examinations may be multiple choice, essay, and/or short answer questions.

Attendance

\ ATTENDANCE POLICY:
\ Regular attendance is necessary for satisfactory achievement. Therefore, it is the responsibility of the student to attend class. Students must attend at least 90% of class meetings. This means 90% of the total number of hours that is allotted to this class.

Calendar

1.         Classroom instruction is Tuesday from 0830a.m. until 1020 a.m. section 1 and 1230 until 1420 section 2 during the fall and spring semesters. Classroom times vary during summer sessions.

2.         The final examination scheduled will be posted at least one month prior to the        final examination week. Students who have a general education course          examination which conflicts with a nursing examination may re-schedule their nursing examination on an individual basis with the consent of the appropriate       nursing faculty member and testing laboratory assistant. The final examination for this course will be taken in the 15th week of the semester.
