As a student you may experience a range of issues that can cause barriers to learning, such as strained relationships, increased anxiety, alcohol/drug problems, feeling down, difficulty concentrating and/or lack of motivation. The National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) and the Performing Arts Medicine Association (PAMA) have developed a comprehensive overview of neuromusculoskeletal, vocal and hearing health issues for postsecondary schools and departments of music. Information of a medical nature is provided by PAMA; information regarding contextual issues in music programs, by NASM. The following links address the risk of noise-induced hearing loss, neuromusculoskeletal and vocal injury—all of which are widespread and serious public health issues for musicians and others.

Certain instruments are available for use through Amarillo College on a first-come, first-serve basis. Please contact the instructor for more information.
STUDENT PERFORMANCE/LEARNING OUTCOMES: At the completion of the semester, the student will be able to:
1. Develop a better understanding of rhythm, and apply this skill to individual and ensemble playing.
2. Learn to better recognize correct intonation within the ensemble as related to the student’s personal performance.
3. Gain a greater understanding of musical style and historical context of the music performed this semester.
4. Participate in a fulfilling musical performance (2-3 concerts per semester)
ATTENDANCE POLICY: Regular attendance is necessary for satisfactory achievement. Therefore, it is the responsibility of the student to attend class (missing one rehearsal is, in reality, just like missing an entire week of class, missing a performance is like missing a major examination over 3 months of material). Notification of excused absences (subject to approval of instructor) must be made in advance of the class period being missed. You may contact me at the above e-mail address. Missing rehearsal is not only detrimental to the student, but the section, band, and the director. By registering in this course, you, the student, pledge the outmost of your abilities to the band, its director, and other authority figures appointed within the band. Music Majors missing rehearsals will not be tolerated.
DISABILITY STATEMENT: Any student who, because of a disabling condition, may require some special arrangements in order to meet course requirements should contact Accessibility Services (SSC 125, Phone 371-5436) as soon as possible.
