POFI-2340-001 Advanced Word Processing

Prerequisites

Prerequisite: POFI 2301-minimum grade of C or demonstrated competence

Course Description

Advanced word processing techniques using merging, macros, graphics and desktop publishing. Includes extensive formatting for technical documents. This course is designed to be repeated multiple times to improve student proficiency.

Signature Series:  Microsoft Word 2013, by Rutkosky and Roggenkamp, EMC Paradigm Publishing, Inc., (ISBN 978-0-76385-199-6)

Required:       Microsoft Office 2013 is required for this course; it is your choice whether to purchase the Professional version or the Home and Student version.  It is also your choice where you purchase the software.  Word 2016 has already been released, so if you need to purchase the Word software, you will have to purchase Word 2016. This will not cause you any problems and will be great. The AC bookstore sells the “365” software, which includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access 2016. It is also very reasonably priced. Another source could be www.JourneyEd.com (1-800-874-9001) as one of the many online sources.  Remember to ask about student discounts.

The above references textbook and this course are written/designed for MS Word 2013.

Student Performance

The student will continue to apply basic knowledge/skills of word processing using Microsoft Word 2013 and will learn the following:  inserting images, shapes, and WordArt; creating/enhancing tables and charts; sorting and selecting; managing lists, shared documents, page numbers, headers, and footers; inserting and customizing Quick Parts; customizing AutoCorrect, Word options, and themes; formatting with styles; protecting documents; inserting endnotes, footnotes, and references; creating indexes, specialized tables, and forms.

By the end of the semester, the student will be able to satisfactorily complete all of the Learning Outcomes (Minimum Competencies) with a competency level based on the completion of required examinations administered under the supervision of the instructor and evaluated according to the instructor’s grading scale in the Office Administration Department.

PERFORMANCE/LEARNING OBJECTIVES (MINIMUM COMPETENCIES):

  1. Reinforce basic word processing knowledge/skills.
  2. Learn, practice, and apply advanced word processing features.
  3. Demonstrate advanced word processing proficiency through assessments and timed production tests.

Expected Student Behavior

PLAGIARISM, CHEATING AND INDIVIDUAL WORK ETHIC:  The Amarillo College policies and Code of Student Conduct is strictly adhered to when dealing with plagiarism, cheating and duplication of work product.  Any evidence of plagiarism, cheating or duplication of work product will result in a zero on the project or test in question.

GRADING SCALE:  See course schedule.  Course grade:  90-100 = A; 80-89 = B; 70-79 = C; 60-69 = D; <60 = F

Production Tests (4)                                                          80 percent

Semester Grade                                                              100 percent

PRODUCTION TESTS: Production tests will be graded as follows:                                                              0   errors = 100; 1 error = 85; 2 errors = 75; 3 errors = 65; 4 errors = 55                                                                                                                                           

There are no incompletes in this class.  There is no “extra credit” to be earned.

Attendance

DEPARTMENTAL ATTENDANCE POLICY:  Employees in the business world are expected to be at work promptly each day; therefore, students in business classes are expected to be in class promptly each day.  This class meets twice per week.  After two absences for any reason, one point per absence will be deducted from the semester average.  There are no excused absences. Three tardies equal one absence.  If you are more than five minutes late to a class, it will be counted as an absence.
