Course Goals/Objectives

Course Description:  A capstone course focusing on the synthesis of professional knowledge, skills and attitudes in preparation for professional employment and lifelong learning.

End-of-Course Outcomes:  Synthesize professional skills, knowledge and attitudes for entry level for professional employment and lifelong learning.

Given the course textbooks, personal notes, handouts, and other course materials, the student should complete each of the following goals as evaluated by the instructor:

  1. Review the terms, facts, theories, principles, and procedures related to each topic.
  2. Apply the knowledge learned from the didactic/clinical experiences.
  3. Review relevant content from the previous NMTT courses.
  4. Pass all mock exams with a grade of '75' or better. (NO ROUNDING  of GRADE.  Ex: 74.5 does not equal 75).
  5. A final grade of ‘C’ or better  (NO ROUNDING of GRADE.  Ex: 74.5 does not equal 75).  
  6. Review NM instrumentation.
  7. Review NM physics
  8. Review NM methodology.
  9. Review NM radiopharmacy/radiochemistry.
  10. Review patient care.
  11. Review NRC regs and radiation safety.
  12. Review all aspects of NM math calculations.
  13. Complete and examine various practice exams per syllabus
  14. Must complete ALL practice exams with a grade of 25 or better in the order on the course outline/calendar.
  15. Review all material as indicated on course syllabus.
  16. Turn in completed ARRT checklist competency form. 
  17. Turn in documentation of completed 8 CE hours if applicable.

Expected Student Behavior

Makeup/Withdrawal Policy

It is not possible for students to miss any aspect of the assigned work, since this is the capstone course.

The student cannot withdrawal from the class and expect to complete the goals/objectives of the capstone experience as scheduled.

Any withdrawal requires student to enroll in course in summer 2017 to finish degree plan.

Students with Disabilities

Grievance Procedures

A student who experiences problems with the course or the course instructor should make every attempt to resolve the problem with the course instructor.  If that is not successful, the student may appeal the decision to the program director, the chairperson of the Health Sciences Division, the dean of instruction, and the college president, in that order.

Students may, however, use personal laptops to take notes only.

Course Communication Methods

It is imperative that clear communication lines/methods have been established among students and the course instructor.

BlackBoard is the official communication site for email, grades, syllabus, etc. 

Student is provided with the instructors email address, class schedule, and relevant phone numbers on the ‘summer 2016 schedule’.

Students sign the ‘acknowledgement form’ that they have received this information and the form is maintained within the student file.

 

Student Success in Nuclear Medicine Technology Seminar Course:

  1. This is a capstone course, which means that it is geared to prompt students to focus on the synthesis of professional knowledge, skills, and attitudes in preparation for professional employment and lifelong learning.  Now is your chance to prove your knowledge retention in all aspects of the didactic and clinical training.
  2. You will be given a task list from week to week, which will cover all aspects of radiopharmacy, federal regulations, instrumentation, patient care, retention of records and methodologies.
  3. Please do not get behind in studying for the material, because it is hard to catch up, since you will be given material to study and test on each week.  
  4. Any question that you are given to answer during this course is subject to possibly be on the Mock Exams, which you must pass with a flat score of 75 or better. (NO ROUNDING)
  5. You may not take any national registry/certification exam until being released from the program, and that is proven by passing the course (to include the mock exams), and the final mock exam will be given on Tuesday, July 12, 2016, at 9am.
  6. I feel confident that all students here will pass the course and mock exams the first time, but in the event that one failure occurs, the student may progress through the course, but will be given a grade of “I” for the course and will not take board exams. The student will be given the opportunity to repeat the failed mock exam in the Fall 2016 Semester the week before classes start.  Upon passing, the grade will be changed officially and the student may take their board exams. In the event a second failure occurs on the same mock exam (the one failed from summer), the grade will be changed to an “F”, whereby the student will have to repeat the course in Fall 2016. Note: you may only repeat a course in the program one time.
  7. If a second failure occurs during the course progression, the student will receive an official grade of an”F”, and may repeat the course in the Fall 2016. 
  8. In the event of any failure, it is my responsibility to notify the testing agencies (ARRT/NMTCB/TMB) of student outcomes, and a restriction is immediately placed on predetermined test appointments and temporary licensure.  Students with this status may not sit for any national board exam until competency has been proven.
  9. Schedule your national exams immediately and as close to July 12, 2016, as possible.  Once you prove competency by passing the course and mock exams, you are ready for your boards, and consequently, to become a registered nuclear medicine technologist and colleague by passing national certification tests.
  10. Make up exams MAY be given but will not count as part of the grade, they will be pass/fail.
  11. The instructor may drop the lowest exam grade.

Grading Criteria

  Grading throughout the course is as follows:

  1. Student must pass each mock exam with a minimal score of ‘75’.  Failure of one exam: Failure to do so results in grade of ‘I’ for this course, and student must take another course mock exam Fall 2016, to complete requirements, but will continue in the course. The student will take a different mock exam in the Fall (TBA) and the grade of I will be changed to the grade earned
  2. If a second failure occurs in the course mock exams in Fall 2016, the student with receive an ‘F’ for the course and must repeat the course in Fall 2016. 
  3. A score of ‘zero’ will be given for any mock exam missed and grade of ‘F’ will be given for this course, and student must repeat the course, to complete requirements.

NO ROUNDING for a passing grade of a 75, student must achieve a flat 75 or greater. 

Letter grades are assigned as follows: A= 94.5-100     B=84.5-94.4     C=75-84.4      F=less than 75

Note: Exam content shall not be discussed amongst students until all students have taken the exam. If a student who has taken the exam discloses exam content to a student who has not taken the exam, this is considered cheating.

Attendance

Regular attendance is necessary for satisfactory achievement of this course.  Attendance and tardiness will be recorded.

While this is a hybrid class, classroom time and exams start promptly at 9am.

Week 2-May 31, 2016-Take Mock exam 1 at WC Testing Center room 104 at 9:00 AM (This exam consists of all material from week 1)

Week 3-June 7, 2016 Work from home via BlackBoard Module

Must complete practice exams 3-4 prior to taking mock exam 2

Study Mock Exam 3 and 4 in Review Book.

Heavy on RP, kit and eluate purity, Generator, methods of biodistribution, physics, TDS math, instrumentation

Review Book-Chapters 8, 9, 10, 11.

Must complete practice exams 5-6 prior to taking mock exam 3

Heavy on instrumentation, image/data reconstruction, PET, rad safety/regs

Refresh therapy products pages 606-620.

Know interventional drugs for NM on pages 26 and 27 of Review Book.

Review PET/CT Material.

Know QC/QA of gamma camera and PET and dose calibrator (use of phantoms, testing frequency, recognition of artifacts, COR, intrinsic/extrinsic, FWHM, Chi Square) 

Week 6-June 28, 2016- Take mock exam 3 in testing center at 9:00 AM room 104

Week 7 -July 5, 2016-

Must complete practice exams 7-8 prior to taking mock exam 4

Study mock exam 7 in review book in preparation for mock exam 4 on Week 8

Continue to study all material.

Week 8-July 12, 2016-Take mock exam 4 at 9:00 AM room 104.

Take final mock exam in WC Testing Center (exam consists of all material from weeks 6 and 7 plus all additional weeks, and review book exam 7!)

Turn in competency profile form containing the required patient competencies (NMT ARRT competency list) no later than day of exit exam.

Pizza party to follow in the classroom.

Turn in documentation of 8 CE hours (if applicable).

Additional Information

The course content is aligned with the Master Educational Plan of the Nuclear Medicine Technology Program at Amarillo College.
In addition, the lecture content aligns with the task analysis of the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board and The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists.

The Nuclear Medicine Technology program at Amarillo College is fully accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Nuclear Medicine Technology.

It is very important that students do not get behind with the course schedule.
