    COURSE OBJECTIVES and OUTCOMES

    1. . Learners will gain a working knowledge as to how individuals impact social situations and groups and how situations and groups impact individual thinking, feeling and behavior.
      2. Learners will gain an understanding of how scientific methodology is applied to studying social psychology.
      3. Learners will analyze the major concepts and theories in the field of social psychology.
      4. Learners will critically and creatively analyze concepts and theories discussed in the text. Students will engage is discussions in class, as well as writing essays related to the text readings and lecture material.
      5. By the end of this course, learners will be able to apply the ideas in this class to real world social situations, such as dealing with prejudice and stereotyping, changing attitudes and behaviors through persuasive techniques (such as those used in politics and advertising), and in creating a sustainable future on our planet, as a few examples.

    Expected Student Behavior

    • I expect you all to attend class online, participate in class assignments, quizzes and exams, be prepared for class exams, and respect everyone else who is the class. Each student is expected to engage in academic honesty and refrain from cheating and/or plagiarism. This means that although this class is online you should be doing your own work. I whole heartedly expect you to use your notes and books on all assignments and exams, you just may not use your friend or classmates. All students are expected to be tolerant and respectful of other students’ responses within class. There will be zero tolerance for any type of harassment!! I want this to be an environment everyone can learn and feels safe!!

    Grading Criteria

    There will be a total of 730 possible points for the semester. I do not plan on changing the amount of points possible, but please check your points often and check online often in case there is a change. If the amount of points possible changes the amount of points needed to earn a certain grade will also change. You will be able to check your grade on AC Online. To calculate your grade you will divide the number of points you have earned (usually the smaller number) by the number of possible points that you could have earned in the class (the larger number). Grading will be on the standard grade scale:

    100-90% = 657 points and above A

    89-80% = 656-584 points B

    79-70% = 583-511 points C

    69-50% = 510-365 points D

    Below 50% = below 365 points F

    The points will be earned:

    400 points for exams

    150 points social responsibility learning project

    100 points for assignments

    80 points for chapter quizzes

    Total points possible: 730 points

    • 4 50 question multiple choice exams online; each exam is worth 100 points
    • 13 quizzes with differing amount of questions. Each folder will contain 20 points for reading quizzes for a total of 80 points.
    • The online assignments: 100 points
      • These assignments will be given within each folder unit
      • You will be required to watch some short clips and respond to question prompts
      • Each assignment needs to be answered completely with complete thoughts and sentences.
    • 150 points for social learning project
      • You will be required to do 4 hours of community service at your chosen agency in the community. You must provide signed documentation for your required hours. Your volunteer verification will be worth 50 points.
      • You will answer 4 short essay questions reflecting on your experience. Question 5 will require you to read graphs and answers a few questions. This portion is worth 100 points.

    Attendance

    It is extremely important that you check online every day for updates and assignment due dates. If you miss an announcement or due date it will negatively effect your grade.

    Chapter quizzes for chapter 1 & chapter 2. Both are due by Thursday June 15th by 11:59 pm.

    Exam 1 opens Thursday June 15th and closes Sunday June 18th 11:59 pm. The exam will cover chapters 1 & 2. 50 multiple choice questions. Once you open the exam you will need to complete it. If you lose connection or close the exam your grade will submit. Please email me as soon as possible with any problems. If you decide to wait until 10:00pm on Sunday night to take exam it might be too late for me to help if you run into problems.

    Folder 2: June 19th- July 2nd

    Chapters 3-5

     Chapter quizzes for chapters 3-5 due Thursday June 29th  

    Assignment #1 Shallow Hal clip and how it relates to social cognition and the self. Due Thursday June 22nd by 11:59 pm.

    Exam 2 opens Thursday June 29th and closes Sunday July 2nd  at 11:59 pm. This exam will cover chapter 3-5. 50 multiple choice questions. Once you open the exam you will need to complete it. If you lose connection or close the exam your grade will submit. Please email me as soon as possible with any problems. If you decide to wait until 10:00pm on Sunday night to take exam it might be too late for me to help if you run into problems.

    Folder 3: July 3rd- July 16th

    Chapters 6-9

    Social Learning project is due Monday July 10th

    Chapter quizzes for chapters 6-9. Due Thursday July 13th by 11:59 pm

    Exam 3 opens Thursday July 13th and close Sunday July 16th at 11:59 pm. This exam covers chapter 6-9. 50 multiple choice questions. Once you open the exam you will need to complete it. If you lose connection or close the exam your grade will submit. Please email me as soon as possible with any problems. If you decide to wait until 10:00pm on Sunday night to take exam it might be too late for me to help if you run into problems.

    Folder 4: July 17th –July 28th

    Chapters 10-13

    Chapter quizzes for chapters 10-13 due Wednesday July 26th 11:59 pm

    Assignment #2 Crash scenes: illustration of stereotypes, prejudice and discrimination. Due Thursday July 20th 11:59 pm.

    Exam 4 opens Wednesday July 26th and closes Friday July 28th 11:59 pm. This exam covers chapters 10-13. 50 multiple choice questions. Once you open the exam you will need to complete it. If you lose connection or close the exam your grade will submit. Please email me as soon as possible with any problems. If you decide to wait until 10:00pm on Sunday night to take exam it might be too late for me to help if you run into problems.
