Prerequisites

Course Description

Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) with an emphasis on airway management. Designed to develop skills for resuscitation of the adult. Includes strategies for managing and stabilizing the cardiopulmonary arrested patient. May include certification.

Student Performance

End-of-Course Outcomes: Describe the principles, techniques, and complications of intravenous and electrical therapy, airway control, ventilation, and supplemental oxygen; analyze cardiac dysrhythmias; integrate basic life support with advanced cardiovascular life support interventions; and summarize airway management principles.

Expected Student Behavior

Please make every effort to be on time.  Late arrivals are very disrupting to the class and to a proper leaning environment.

CELL PHONES MUST BE TURNED OFF OR BE IN VIBRATE ONLY MODE DURING CLASS AND EXAMS.

Other disruptive behavior, such as carrying on private conversations with the folks around you, snoring, etc, may lead to your being asked to leave the classroom.  If his happens, you will not be allowed to return until after a counseling session with me and the program director.

Grading Criteria

This course is worth a total of 500 points.  The breakdown is as follows: 

  • 50 attendance points per day for a total of 100 points (if a student is late, he or she will start the day with 75 points)
  • 100 points for the pre-course exam (multiple attempts are offered on this exam in order to receive the maximum number of possible points, however, all of these attempts must be made before the first day of class)
  • 100 points for the written exam
  • 200 points for the successful completion of all American Heart Association requirements for receiving the ACLS provider card (details are listed under Additional Information of the course syllabus)

Grade Scale:

  • 447.5 – 500    points= A
  • 397.5 – 447.4 points= B
  • 372.5 – 397.4 points= C
  • <372.4         points= F

Students must complete the pre-course exam and score an 80% or higher before attending the class.  The test results must be printed and the student must bring a copy of those results to class.  You will not be admitted to the course if you do not have your test results. 

The passing grade for the written exam is set by the American Heart Association at 84%. 

Due to the nature of this course, no makeup will be offered on the written exam or skills proficiency test.

Attendance

This is a two day course.  Attendance is required both days for successful completion of the course.  There are no exceptions.

Additional Information

Expectations of this Course:

  1. Must return demonstrate 2 complete minutes of CPR
  2. Demonstrate use of airway adjuncts
  3. Pass a Megacode
  4. Pass written exam
    1. Score of 84 and above is passing
    2. Score of 78-84 can be remediated to a passing score
    3. Any score below 76 will be given a secondary test.  You must make an 84 or above to pass.  If not, you will be asked to take another New Provider class.
