WLDG-1377-001 Gas Metal Arc Welding I (GMAW)

Prerequisites

Prerequisite: WLDG 1375 - minimum grade of C

Course Description

Instruction and practice of equipment inspection, maintenance, repair and set up for gas metal arc welding. Instruction and practice in the production of fillet and groove welds in all positions on carbon steel using short circuit transfer. Practice and production of assemblies and coupons to be examined and tested according to Section 8 AWS SENSE QC10.

    Student Performance

    • Makes groove welds in all positions on gauge and plate carbon steel.
    • Passes GMAW welder performance qualification test (1G, 2G and 3G, uphill, limited thickness test plates) on carbon steel.

    Expected Student Behavior

    Notebook & Class Equipment

    Students are recommended to take notes during lectures and should maintain a class notebook containing handouts and reference materials. Students shall furnish personal protective equipment to include safety glasses and have their own personal hand tools similar to those on the department tool list.  Failure to bring required tools and books may result in loss of grade.

     

    Shop Policy

    Read safety handouts provided, use common sense, maintain safe shop practices, keep your Lab clean, and orderly. Keep all safety shields/guards, and equipment in place at all times. Notify your Instructor of faulty wiring/equipment, worn or damaged tools, or missing parts. No horseplay is allowed whatsoever. Academic disciplinary measures will be promptly administered to offending person(s). Please help the Instructor to maintain order so that he can be free to use your time for more effective teaching, and less time housekeeping. We all can enjoy the benefits of an effective and conducive learning environment. Remember to use your safety glasses when entering the shop area.

     

    Tools, Equipment, and Clothing

    Students shall wear appropriate clothing to perform any work task assigned. Tools and equipment specified for this class and any preliminary class in the curriculum are to be furnished by the student. Failure to dress for work or bring needed equipment may count as an absence. All tools should be properly used and cared for, thus allowing for longevity and safety of both the user and the tool.  Students will be dismissed from class with loss of grade for violations of P.P.E.

     

    Stealing, vandalism, or pilferage will be dealt with severely!! No drugs, tobacco, drinks, or food allowed!

     

    All students are expected to follow the Amarillo College Students Code of Conduct. Any violation of this Code will be dealt with appropriately.  Any student disrupting class or lab in violation of the Amarillo College East Campus Code of Conduct will be asked to leave immediately.  Failure to leave will result in a call to Campus Police.

    Students should complete all projects and the performance test at the REQUIRED PROFESSIONAL LEVEL.  They will be scored on neatness, completeness, procedure, professionalism, attitude, attendance and punctuality, shop cleanup,and SAFETY PRACTICES.

    Attendance

    Attendance and Participation in class and lab is regarded as a requirement and an obligation for learning.  Due to class schedules in accelerated programs, it will not be possible to have make up days for classes which have been missed.  Students should make every effort possible to attend and be on time for all classes.  being more than 20 minutes late for a class or leaving early without the instructor’s permission will count as a ½ day absence.

    Class begins promptly at either 8:00 a.m. or 13:00 p.m. as scheduled. Failure to be in seat ready to learn at the start of class will result in a loss of attendance and participation grade, this also includes returning from scheduled breaks

    Day 1- – Class orientation, welding safety, equipment setup and operation

    Day 2- – Learn amperage and voltage settings, weld beads on flat plate

    Day 3- – Lap, tee, and butt welds, flat position, 10 ga mild steel

    Day 4- – Same as day 3

    Day 5- – Lap, tee, and butt welds, vertical position, downhill, 10 ga mild steel

    Day 6- – Same as day 5

    Day 7- – Lap, tee, and butt welds, overhead position, 10 ga mild steel-Chapter 19,20,21 due

    Day 8- – Same as day 7

    Day 9- – 3/8” steel plate, open butt, horizontal (2G)------ WRITTEN MID TERM TEST, chapter 22 due

    Day 10- – Same as day 9

    Day 11- – Same as day 9

    Day 12- – 3/8” steel plate, open butt, vertical (3G)

    Day 13- – Same as day 12

    Day 14- –  Same as day 12

    Day 15- –  (2G) and (3G) bend tests-----WRITTEN FINAL-notebooks due

    Day 16- –  Finish bend tests

     

    Additional Information

    SAFETY IS OUR ONE MOST IMPORTANT  CONCERN.  NO ONE IS ALLOWED IN ANY SHOP WITHOUT SAFETY GLASSES AS WELL AS ANY OTHER APPROPRIATE SAFETY GEAR.  ALL STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO FOLLOW THE AMARILLO COLLEGE TECHNICAL EDUCATION CODE OF PROFESSIONAL CONDUCT.  COMPLIANCE WITH THE CODE IS MANDATORY FOR CLASS PARTICIPATION.
