Administrative Drop Policy

Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a class must:

  • consult with their instructor to obtain a signed academic withdrawal request form to submit to the AskAC department for processing
  • consult with the financial aid office if receiving financial aid
  • consult with the Veterans Benefit Coordinator if receiving veteran benefits
  • consult with their academic advisor to determine how withdrawing may affect their enrollment in future semesters
    • NOTE:  The Texas Education Code stipulates that students attending Texas institutions of higher education for the first time fall 2007 and later may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career, including courses from which transfer students have withdrawn at other Texas institutions of higher education. (Senate Bill 1231) Rule 4.10.

Prerequisites

Course Description

Overview of federal and state laws governing the practice of pharmacy. The role of the pharmacy technician and the pharmacist and their associated responsibilities. Includes Code of Ethics, patient confidentiality, and a comparison of legal and ethical aspects.

Student Performance

(minimum competencies) After studying the material presented in this course of study, the student will be able to do the following as evaluated by the faculty in the department/program.
Upon completion of PHRA 1102, the student will be able to:
 
  1. Identify and describe the responsibilities of technicians versus pharmacists in various pharmacy settings
  2. Identify and describe federal and state regulations governing safety, storage and dispensing of medications
  3. Define the different applications of federal and state pharmacy laws
  4. List all five schedules under the Controlled Substances Act
  5. Identify various drugs in each schedule.
  6. Recognize basic laws and legal systems.
  7. Identify various Federal Laws.
  8. Understand Federal vs. State regulations.
  9. Be familiar with Texas regulations.
  10. Understand new drug application process.

Expected Student Behavior

Adult, professional behavior is expected at all times.
Academic dishonesty will result in a final grade of "F" for the course. Any attempt to cheat will be considered as academic dishonesty and will also result in a final grade of “F” for the course.

Grading Criteria

The final course grade will be computed as follows:
*The average of all exams equals 30% of the final grade
*The average of all case studies equals 20% of the final grade
*The New Drug Process Project equals 20% of the final grade
*The final equals 30% of the final grade
 
The following grade scale applies:
A = 90-100%
B = 80-89%
C = 70-79%
F = Less than 70%
 

Mandatory Skills Building :  In an effort to increase retention in Pharmacy courses, any student who scores below a 70 on any exam (excluding the Final Exam week) must complete a mandatory skills building assignment before taking the next exam. Before receiving a skills assignment, students must first schedule a time with the instructor. The assignment will be given at that time.  THIS IS MANDATORY.

Illegible work will not be graded.

There will be no make-up exams or late work accepted. The student will receive a grade of ZERO for anything missed.
**With regard to exams only, the instructor will consider only written petitions for emergency situations and undue hardships on an individual basis. The decision of the instructor to accept or reject the petition is final. The process must be initiated by the student and occur within 48 hours of the missed class period.
