Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a class must:

  • consult with their instructor to obtain a signed academic withdrawal request form to submit to the AskAC department for processing
  • consult with the financial aid office if receiving financial aid
  • consult with the Veterans Benefit Coordinator if receiving veteran benefits
  • consult with their academic advisor to determine how withdrawing may affect their enrollment in future semesters
    • NOTE:  The Texas Education Code stipulates that students attending Texas institutions of higher education for the first time fall 2007 and later may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career, including courses from which transfer students have withdrawn at other Texas institutions of higher education. (Senate Bill 1231) Rule 4.10.

Student Performance

(minimum competencies) After studying the material presented in this course of study, the student will be able to do the following as evaluated by the faculty in the department/program.
Upon completion of PHRA 1404, the student will be able to:
  1. Examine principles of drug action in the body and individual cells, including body absorption and distribution in relation to therapeutic blood levels and the process of clearing systemically dispersed agents through metabolism and elimination.
  2. Anticipate how best to promote safety and avoid medication errors through drug label and medication order literacy skills. Be able to communicate effectively with patients and other members of the healthcare team. Implement appropriate patient warning labels to promote thorough understanding of drug regimen requirements by patients and medical staff.
  3. Anticipate possible side effects and related dispensing strategy for each drug class as well as for specific agents. Analyze labeling requirements for various classes of pharmaceuticals and cautions when dispensing based on thorough understanding of interactions between classes of pharmaceuticals, individual agents, and natural supplements.
  4. Describe ways various classes of anti-infective drugs work against microorganisms and identify uses of these drugs in eliminating specific microorganisms from the body.
  5. Explain the action of neurotransmitters in the nervous system, relate classes of pharmaceuticals that affect or change neurotransmitter action, and describe therapeutic results obtained with the various neurological agent classes.
  6. Explain principles of how various classes of pharmaceuticals act when utilized in aiding respiratory gas exchanges, circulating blood pressure and cardiac rhythms, and blood filtration.
  7. Compare action of pharmaceutical agents when applied to the digestive system and examine, compare, and describe how these agents affect other physiological processes (e.g., blood pressure and sugar levels).
  8. Define the action of the endocrine glands and hormones, delineate hormone supplement and replacement therapies, and compile adverse effects of inadequate and excess administration.
  9. Identify the physiological action and deficiency symptoms of vitamin classes, explore natural supplements and potential therapeutic value, and examine the use of natural supplements in conjunction with prescription medications.

Expected Student Behavior

Adult, professional behavior is expected at all times.
Academic dishonesty will result in a final grade of "F" for the course. Any attempt to cheat will be considered as academic dishonesty and will result in a final grade of “F” for the course.

Grading Criteria

The final course grade will be computed as follows:
*The average of all exams equals 25% of the final grade
*Paper will equal 20% of the final grade
*The average of all chapter summeries will equal 10% of the final grade
*The average of all chapter quizzes will equal 15% of the final grade
*The final equals 30% of the final grade
The following grade scale applies:
 
A = 90-100%
B = 80-89%
C = 70-79%
F = Less than 70%
 
Mandatory Skills Building :  In an effort to increase retention in Pharmacy courses, any student who scores below a 70 on any exam (excluding the Final Exam week) must complete a mandatory skills building assignment before taking the next exam. Before receiving a skills assignment, students must first schedule a time with the instructor. The assignment will be given at that time.  THIS IS MANDATORY.
 
Students will not be allowed to make-up exams, homework, or quizzes. The student will receive a grade of ZERO for anything missed.
 
**With regard to exams only, the instructor will consider only written petitions for emergency situations and undue hardships on an individual basis. The decision of the instructor to accept or reject the petition is final. The process must be initiated by the student and occur within 48 hours of the missed class period.

Each chapter summary and quiz is due weekly.

For each chapter, do the following:

  • Experience the PowerPoint presentation and write down your answers to the included “Discussion” question slides.
  • Review the Drug Tables as provided on the Study Partner CD
  • Complete the Matching exercises as provided on the Study Partner CD
  • Spend 15 minutes reviewing the Flash Cards provided on the Study Partner CD
  • Take one or more Quizzes in Practice Mode as provided on the Study Partner CD
