Administrative Drop Policy

Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a class must:

  • consult with their instructor to obtain a signed academic withdrawal request form to submit to the AskAC department for processing
  • consult with the financial aid office if receiving financial aid
  • consult with the Veterans Benefit Coordinator if receiving veteran benefits
  • consult with their academic advisor to determine how withdrawing may affect their enrollment in future semesters
    • NOTE:  The Texas Education Code stipulates that students attending Texas institutions of higher education for the first time fall 2007 and later may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career, including courses from which transfer students have withdrawn at other Texas institutions of higher education. (Senate Bill 1231) Rule 4.10.

RDNG-0331-001 Reading Techniques II

Prerequisites

Prerequisite: RDNG 0321-minium grade of C, TSI reading score of 347-350 or equivalent score on a state approved test

Course Description

Improve reading comprehension and vocabulary through analysis and application of reading skills. Develop critical thinking skills necessary for reading college-level textbooks.

Textbooks

Textbook:  Exercise Your College Reading Skills, Janet Elder, 2nd Edition
Access card:  Connect Reading 3.0

The access card is packaged with the textbook at the college bookstore.

Supplies

Internet access is required for this course. Students may use the computers in Room 012A in the basement of the Ware Student Commons or on the fourth floor of the Ware Student Commons to complete their assignments. Students may also access their assignments via the Internet at home or at any public library.

Student Performance

To prepare the student to comprehend reading material presented in college level textbooks.  At the conclusion of the course, the student must demonstrate mastery of the following skills at 70%: 

1.  Analyze the meanings of words and phrases.

2.  Determine the main idea and supporting details in written material.

3.  Evaluate a writer's purpose, point of view, and intended meaning.

4.  Analyze the relationship among ideas in written material.

5.  Use critical reasoning skills to evaluate written material.

6.  Apply study skills to reading assignments in college textbooks.

Log in using the AC Connect Portal

In order to receive your AC Connect Email, you must log in through AC Connect at https://acconnect.actx.edu .

If you are an active staff or faculty member according to Human Resources, use "Exchange". All other students, use "AC Connect (Google) Email".

Expected Student Behavior

  1. Online discussions and e-mail are integral parts of the course.  All discussion submissions and e-mail must be polite and free from vulgar language or profanity.  Please use correct grammar and complete sentences.
  2. Any type of cheating or academic dishonesty is prohibited.  The “Student Rights and Responsibilities” publication outlines the definition of academic dishonesty and the associated penalties.

Grading Criteria

The following criteria will be used to determine your grade:

 A   90-100  Passing
B  80-89  Passing
C  70-79  Passing
D  60-69  Failing
F  59 or below  Failing

 

The semester average will be determined as follows:

  15%  Assignments
  15%  Lab
  40%  Tests
  30%  Final Exam

 

REQUIRED TESTS:

  • Test 1
  • Test 2
  • Test 3
  • Final Exam

Tests 1-3 will only be available during the assigned week.  The Final Exam will only be available the first 2 days of Final Exam week.
 

REQUIRED ASSIGNMENTS:

As part of the course requirements of Reading 0331, assignments must be completed each week.  Students will complete the assignments in their textbook and then submit their answers via AC Connect.  In addition, there will be online assignments that will be due each week that are not in the textbook.

 

REQUIRED LAB:

As part of the course requirements of Reading 0331, assigned lab must be completed each week.  Lab assignments will include computer lessons from McGraw-Hill Connect Reading 3.0 or other activities approved by your instructor.  Weekly lab grades will be based on the percentage of questions answered correctly for the assigned lessons in Connect.  When a student is logged into a computer for the purpose of completing lab, the student must be actively involved in the lesson at all times.


MAKE-UP POLICY:  

Tests

Due dates for tests are indicated in the course. Ten (10) points may be deducted from all major tests taken late. All major tests not taken within one week of the scheduled test date will receive a grade of zero (0) unless prior arrangements have been made with the instructor.

Assignments

Assignments must be submitted by the deadline to receive credit. Assignments will not be taken late. Any assignment not completed on time will receive a grade of zero (0).

Lab

All lab assignments are due on assigned days at the assigned times. Any lab assignment not completed on time will receive a grade of zero (0).

Attendance

Regular "attendance" is necessary for satisfactory achievement.  Submitting designated assignments on the due date indicates regular attendance.  Therefore, it is the responsibility of the student to submit assignments on time.  It will be the responsibility of the student to drop the class by the withdrawal date should he/she stop attending; otherwise, a grade of "F" will be given.

TUTORING

Tutoring will be available throughout the fall and spring semesters.  Tutoring may be used in place of lab.  Call 371-5458 or drop by Room 012A in the basement of the Ware Student Commons to make an appointment.

 

NOTE

A student may take the TSI Assessment anytime during the semester.  If he/she receives a score indicating college-readiness on the reading portion of either test, the student should immediately visit with the instructor to discuss options available at that time.
