Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a class must:

  • consult with their instructor to obtain a signed academic withdrawal request form to submit to the AskAC department for processing
  • consult with the financial aid office if receiving financial aid
  • consult with the Veterans Benefit Coordinator if receiving veteran benefits
  • consult with their academic advisor to determine how withdrawing may affect their enrollment in future semesters
    • NOTE:  The Texas Education Code stipulates that students attending Texas institutions of higher education for the first time fall 2007 and later may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career, including courses from which transfer students have withdrawn at other Texas institutions of higher education. (Senate Bill 1231) Rule 4.10.

ANTH-2302-001 Introduction to Archeology

Prerequisites

Prerequisite: RDNG 0331-minimum grade of C or a score on a state-approved test indicating college-level reading skills

Course Description

The study of the human past through material remains. The course includes a discussion of methods and theories relevant to archeological inquiry. Topics may include the adoption of agriculture, response to environmental change, the emergence of complex societies and ethics in the discipline.

There are no textbooks required for this class.  All lectures and other reading material can be found online.

Student Performance

Course Objectives: 

After taking this course, students should have the following:

1.  a basic understanding of the history of archaeology;

2.  understand how archaeologists work and what they're looking for;

3.  understanding the dating methods and terminology of archaeology;

4.  and know something about the archaeology of our own hemisphere.

Students are expected to do the reading and homework necessary to become familiar with these objectives, and to pass their exams.

Expected Student Behavior

In the context of discussions, I expect students to respect each other's opinions and to give each other space to disagree without becoming hostile or angry.  I expect homework to be done on time. 

Grading Criteria

A = 90-100

B = 80-89

C = 70-79

D = 60-69

F = 0-59

Your grade for this class will be based on completion of your weekly homework assignments, your weekly discussions, your quiz grades, and a field project.  Your homework and discussions will count for 40% of your grade.  Your quizzes will count for 40%, and your field project will count for the other 20%.  You'll have 5 quizzes, and I'll drop your lowest quiz grade. Information and instructions about the field project are on your Lesson page.  Your homework will consist of several questions on the assigned reading for the week.  Your grades on homework will depend on how well you answer the questions. There are no right or wrong answers on your discussion questions.  However, in order to get full credit, you'll need to answer the questions and respond to the answers of at least 2 other people.  That means you need to post at least 3 times. I want good responses, not just "I agree with you," or "I don't agree with you."  I also expect you to be respectful of each other's opinions in the discussion area.  You can disagree with someone without being disrespectful.  I encourage lively discussion and I expect you to disagree, but you have to be respectful.

Attendance

Homework assignments and discussions have deadlines, so students must log into the class and post their work in order to get a grade for the week.

You will complete 14 lessons this semester.  A new assignment will be posted every Monday morning at 6:00 a.m., and it will be due the following Sunday night at 11:59 p.m.  Below are the Lessons for this semester. * The Final Quiz (Quiz 5) will be posted at 6:00 a.m. on December 12.  It will be due at 11:59 p.m. on December 14.  It will cover only Lessons 13 and 14 and a few questions from Lesson 12.
