Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a class must:

• consult with their instructor to obtain a signed academic withdrawal request form to submit to the AskAC department for processing
• consult with the financial aid office if receiving financial aid
• consult with the Veterans Benefit Coordinator if receiving veteran benefits
• consult with their academic advisor to determine how withdrawing may affect their enrollment in future semesters
  • NOTE:  The Texas Education Code stipulates that students attending Texas institutions of higher education for the first time fall 2007 and later may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career, including courses from which transfer students have withdrawn at other Texas institutions of higher education. (Senate Bill 1231) Rule 4.10.

BIOL-2401-022 Anatomy and Physiology I

Prerequisite: RDNG 0331-minimum grade of C or a score on a state-approved test indicating college-level reading skills; SCIT 1307 recommended

Course Description

Anatomy and Physiology I is the first part of a two course sequence. It is a study of the structure and function of the human body including cells, tissues and organs of the following systems: integumentary, skeletal, muscular, nervous and special senses. Emphasis is on interrelationships among systems and regulation of physiological functions involved in maintaining homeostasis. The lab provides hands-on learning experience for exploration of human system components and basic physiology.

2. Human Anatomy & Physiology Laboratory Manual, 11th edition, cat version, by Marieb, Mitchell and Smith. Pearson Publishing.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Use anatomical terminology to identify and describe locations of major organs of each system covered.
2. Explain interrelationships among molecular, cellular, tissue and organ functions in each system.
3. Describe the interdependency and interactions of the systems.
4. Explain contributions of organs and systems to the maintenance of homeostasis.
5. Identify causes and effects of homeostatic imbalances.
6. Describe modern technology and tools used to study anatomy and physiology.
7. Apply appropriate safety and ethical standards.

9. Appropriately utilize laboratory equipment, such as microscopes, dissection tools, general lab ware, physiology data acquisition systems and virtual simulations.

In order to receive your AC Connect Email, you must log in through AC Connect at https://acconnect.actx.edu .

If you are an active staff or faculty member according to Human Resources, use "Exchange". All other students, use "AC Connect (Google) Email".

Expected Student Behavior

Students are expected to have prepared for lecture and lab by reading the course texts before each course meeting.

Communication of grades and class information will be through ACConnect on our class homepage and through your AC email account. You must access these accounts regularly to stay current with class and college information.

You must keep your returned papers in the case of any disputed records.

Cell phones are allowed in the silent or vibrate mode during regular lecture/lab.  If you must take an emergency call, please leave quietly.  No earphone use in class. If you abuse this privilege the instructor reserves the right to ask you to leave class.

Cell phones must be OFF and OUT OF SIGHT during exams, practicals and quizzes.   You will not be able to begin an exam after someone has left the room. No exceptions. Please see the Biology Contract.

Food and drink is allowed except during dissection labs.  You must clean up after yourself or risk losing a quiz grade.

Please avoid any appearance of cheating. Cheating of any kind may cause you to fail the course and/or be expelled from the college.  Please see the Biology Contract and the Student Handbook.  

If you must leave the classroom, please do so quietly.  If leaving becomes disruptive, the instructor will not allow returns to class.

Courtesy for your fellow students and the instructor is required. Behave as though your future employer is sitting next to you.

Grading Criteria

A = 100 – 89.5%, B = 89 – 79.5%, C = 79 - 69.5%, D = 69 – 59.55, F = 59% or less

25%  Comprehensive Final Exam

40%  5 Lecture Exams

25%  4 Lab Practical Exams

10%  Daily Grades such as Quizzes and Labs

Students are responsible for all material in the text that is discussed in class, the course notes are not a substitute for the textbook.The text is our ultimate resource.

It is not necessary to contact the instructor if you will miss class unless it will be a prolonged absence. You must contact the Instructor by email if you wish to drop. The last day to withdraw is Nov 22, 2016.

Daily grades are to encourage you to attend class, they cannot be made up for any reason.  Making up an exam is at the instructor’s discretion.  Please see the Biology Department Policy.

If you receive a grade of less that 70% on any major exam you must attend 1 hour of free tutoring in the Science Enrichment Center before you can take your next exam.  Drop grades and/or skipping an exam are not exceptions to this requirement.  Tutoring is not negotiable.  See the Testing Center Policy.

Contested grades because of math error or disputed questions must be submitted to the instructor during office hours or by course email with the appropriate supporting evidence. These issues will not be discussed in class.

A student who has a grievance concerning an academic course in which he or she is enrolled should make an appeal in the following order to the

3. Division Chair
4. Vice President of Academic Affairs
5. College President

In the case of Weather Closings, please check the AC website and/or local radio and television.  When in doubt, STAY SAFE.  If an assignment is scheduled for a closed day it should be expected in the next class meeting.  Be prepared.

Attendance

Attendance is absolutely necessary to be successful in this course.  Attendance will be taken each class day.

TEST ADMINISTRATION:

All on Washington Street lecture exams are to be administered in the STC (Warren Hall 112) except the final exam and take-home exams. Final exams are to be taken in class with the instructor.  No STC exams shall be taken during the allotted lecture or laboratory time for the course.  If a student skips a lecture or lab to take and exam, 10 points will be deducted from the exam.  All online examinations shall be administered using Respondus lockdown browser or other approved software system and require a webcam unless it is taken in an on-campus proctored location such as the STC.  A minimum of 48 hours will be given for all on-campus exams and online exams and quizzes.  On-campus exams and online exams and quizzes must be completed within the days allotted.  Exceptions to this time period shall only be related to a disruption or failure of the course management or delivery system.  In-class quizzes may be given at the instructor’s discretion.

One take-home (open-book/group) exam may be given per class per semester, excluding the final.  The final may not be given as an open-book, take-home, or group exam.  Material from take-home exams must be included in the final exam.

MANDATORY TUTORING FOR ALL CLASSES

For Washington St. Campus classes, any student that makes below 70% on an exam is required to attend a 1 hour tutoring session with either the instructor or Student Enrichment Center (SEC) personnel before they will be allowed to take their next exam.  Tutoring times will be at the instructors or SEC personnel’s convenience. Students that have not completed the 1 hour mandatory tutoring will not be able to make-up the exam past the exam closing date.

For online classes, online tutoring must be conducted via web link with either the instructor or SEC personnel for all online classes currently set up for online tutoring.  Students must contact their instructor or SEC personnel for availability of online times for instruction.

WITHDRAWALS:

Students who wish to withdraw from a class must consult with their instructor first. Students can either communicate via email or meet face-to-face with their instructor to begin the withdrawal process. If the instructor and the student both agree that withdrawal is the appropriate course of action, then the instructor will initiate a withdrawal case for the student in the Retention Alert System (AC Connect).

 Students will receive confirmation that their withdrawal request has been completed. The Registrar’s Office will process the withdrawal and notify both the student and instructor via AC email.
