Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a class must:

• consult with their instructor to obtain a signed academic withdrawal request form to submit to the AskAC department for processing
• consult with the financial aid office if receiving financial aid
• consult with the Veterans Benefit Coordinator if receiving veteran benefits
• consult with their academic advisor to determine how withdrawing may affect their enrollment in future semesters
  • NOTE:  The Texas Education Code stipulates that students attending Texas institutions of higher education for the first time fall 2007 and later may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career, including courses from which transfer students have withdrawn at other Texas institutions of higher education. (Senate Bill 1231) Rule 4.10.

Prerequisites

Course Description

In-depth coverage of the structure and function of the human body. Topics include the cell with specific emphasis on the basic cell structure and its functions, the cell life cycle, cell reproduction and basic cell chemistry. Other topics may include tissues; body organization; and the integumentary, skeletal, muscular, nervous and endocrine systems. Emphasis will be on homeostasis.

GRIEVANCE PROCEDURE/ DROPPING THE COURSE:

If a student is having a problem with the course policies or the instructor, he or she should first try and resolve any such problems with the instructor. If the problem is not resolved, the student may proceed to the Biology Department Chairperson (Dr. Kathy Wetzel), the Dean of Academic Transfer Jerry Moller, the Vice President for Academic Affairs (Dr. Russell Lowry-Hart), and the college President (Dr. Matney), IN THAT ORDER.

Effective with the Fall 2007 semester a new Texas law mandates that students may only drop or withdraw six (6) times in their entire college career.  If you transfer to another Texas school, you do not start over; so, if you drop four classes at AC, then you only have two drops left.  If you drop before the census date, then that does not count in the six drop status.  As I understand the law, if you use you six drops and decided to try to drop a seventh class, you cannot do so.

After studying the material presented in this course of study, the student will be able to do the following:

1. Understand concepts of matter and energy.

2. Understand atoms, elements, molecules, and mixtures.

3. Demonstrate understanding of chemical bonds, and differentiate between ionic and covalent bonds.

4. Identify three major types of chemical reactions and describe factors that affect chemical reaction rates.

5. Define acid and base and explain the concept of pH

6. Describe and compare the building blocks, general structures, and biological functions of carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids.

7. Identify the structures and describe the functions of the major organelles of the cell.

8. Explain chemical reactions in the cell.

9. Describe key events in the phases of the cell life cycle.

10. Describe the role of  DNA and RNA in protein synthesis.

Course Description

PURPOSE AND GOALS OF COURSE:

By the end of the semester the student will be able to satisfactorily complete all the listed learning objectives with a minimum of 60 percent competency level based on the completion of a minimum of five (5) major exams and a comprehensive post examination not to exceed two ours. These will be administered under the supervision of the instructor.

STUDENT BEHAVIOR

Every effort will be made to maintain a proper learning atmosphere. Any student that violates the student code of conduct will be dealt with according to the procedures within the student handbook. 

CYBER BULLY

You may bring food and drink into both lecture and lab; however if you spill something, please clean up after yourself. No food or drink will be allowed in the lab during dissections.

Cell phones in the tradtional classroom

Please be considerate of your classmates when bringing your cell phone to  class! Please leave cell phones on silent mode. If your cell phone goes off during a test you will receive a zero.

Grading Criteria

LECTURE: One-half of the total grade for the semester comes from*5 major exams that cover lectures and reading materials in the form of T/F, multiple multiples, matching, identify and fill in the blank.*Random Quizzes and online assignments will be averaged for one major exam grade.

FINAL EXAM: A comprehensive exam equal to one-fourth of the total grade for the semester.  Final exam is Mandatory and cannot be dropped.

LABORATORY: One-fourth of the total grade for the semester.

Grades will not be curved nor will any points be added to any grade.

Mandatory Tutoring

If you make less than a 70 on any major test, you will be required to obtain 30 minutes of tutoring from the Science Enrichment Center prior to taking the next test.  You will not be allowed to take the next test until after I have verification that you have received this tutoring. Tutoring must be done within 10 days of the exam.

9am - 6pm Sat
No test will be passed out any later than 1.5 hours before closing time

Attendance

No make up will be given for missed major exams or short quizzes.  A grade of zero will be given for any missed major exam or short quiz. NO EXCEPTIONS.  If you have a computer problem or a schedule conflict. You have one drop exam to use as a replacement. There will be no other exceptions.

 Regular attendance is necessary for satisfactory achievement.

DISABLING CONDITION

Any student who, because of a disabling condition, may require some special arrangements in order to meet course requirements should contact Disability Services (SSC 119, Phone 371-5436) as soon as possible.
