Study and application of costume construction, which may include basic sewing, patterning and period/styles. Students will also learn the principles and techniques for theatrical costume design.

After studying the material presented in this course of study, the student will be able to do the following as evaluated by the faculty in the department/program.
1. Recognize and properly use sewing machines, notions, and related equipment.
2. POSSESS A DEEP RESPECT FOR THE THEATRE`S SAFETY PROCEDURES.
3. Understand basic costume construction techniques that can be applied to any production.
4. Utilize and understand theatrical terminology.
5. Apply basic patterning and design skills.
This course is designed to familiarize the student with the basics of costume construction. Through demonstration and practice, the theatre major or interested student will be able to apply knowledge from this course to the real-world production of plays at this school and at other venues.
Extensive demonstration, terminology, and application will give the student a comfortable and confident understanding of technical procedures used in the theatrical costume shop.
A final look at rendering and design will give the student a taste for production design as well as the ability to read plates and swatches and understand them.

Each student is allowed three unexcused absences before your final grade is affected. For each absence beyond these allotted three, the student’s grade will be reduced by one-half grade with each subsequent absence. In addition to unexcused absences, three tardies or early exits will equal one absence. Participation in official university business must be documented by a written notice from the sponsoring faculty or staff member. A student who is absent from classes for official university business day shall be allowed to take an examination or complete an assignment scheduled within a reasonable time.

Projects and Assessments
Quick Change Quiz:
You will be given a chance to practice quick changes, then be timed. A grade will be
assigned depending on your time versus others in the class. This will count as the quiz
grade for the lab portion of the course. The top 3 times will receive a 100; the next 3, 95.
The next 3 will receive an 90; the next to the last 3 85, the last 3, 80. If you do not show up
for the day this quiz is given, you will automatically receive 0. No make up exams will be
given.
Sewing Project:
Information about the project will be given in class. Projects are graded on neatness, correct seam
allowances, smoothness of seams, and finished look. While I am here to assist in the building,
initiative should be taken in reading instructions with an attempt to follow them. Points will be
taken off for unfinished work. While I understand there are unforeseen circumstances, do not turn
the shirt in late. Ten points will be taken off for each day it is late. This includes weekends. !!!
Play Quiz:
One in-class quiz over the assigned play Caucasian Chalk Circle by Bertolt Brecht. This play will
be used for the Design Project.
Design Collage:
You will create a visual collage of the play Caucasian Chalk Circle. Specific requirements for this
assignment will be discussed in class as well as an example provided.
Action and Costume Plot:
Examples will be provided for this assignment.
Drawing Assignment:
One male and one female sketch. Examples will be provided.
Final Presentation:
Four fully colored renderings, 2 male and 2 females from the Caucasian Chalk Circle. Renderings
must be labeled and swatched. Designs will be graded on neatness, overall look, including
necessary labeling, matching color to swatches, and character appropriateness.
