Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a class must:

  • consult with their instructor to obtain a signed academic withdrawal request form to submit to the AskAC department for processing
  • consult with the financial aid office if receiving financial aid
  • consult with the Veterans Benefit Coordinator if receiving veteran benefits
  • consult with their academic advisor to determine how withdrawing may affect their enrollment in future semesters
    • NOTE:  The Texas Education Code stipulates that students attending Texas institutions of higher education for the first time fall 2007 and later may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career, including courses from which transfer students have withdrawn at other Texas institutions of higher education. (Senate Bill 1231) Rule 4.10.

WLDG-1377-002 Gas Metal Arc Welding I (GMAW)

Prerequisites

Prerequisite: WLDG 2379 - minimum grade of C

Course Description

Instruction and practice of equipment inspection, maintenance, repair and set up for gas metal arc welding. Instruction and practice in the production of fillet and groove welds in all positions on carbon steel using short circuit transfer. Practice and production of assemblies and coupons to be examined and tested according to Section 8 AWS SENSE QC10.

Student Performance

Follows verbal instructions to complete work assignments

Performs safety inspections of ell equipment

Makes minor repairs as needed

Sets up and operates SMAW equipment on carbon steel with E6010 and E7018 electrodes

Makes pads of overlapping weld beads on flat carbon steel plates with E 6010 and 7018 electrodes

Makes fillet welds in all positions on weld blocks with E6010 and E7018 electrodes

Expected Student Behavior

Students are required to conduct themselves according to the Student’s code of Professional Conduct.  This is to include the dress code and wearing the Amarillo College Technical Education logo Uniform shirts.

Grading Criteria

Students should complete all projects and Performance Tests at the REQUIRED PROFESSIONAL LEVEL.  They will be scored on neatness, completeness, procedure, professionalism, attitude, attendance, shop cleanup, and SAFETY PRACTICES.

Attendance

Attendance in class and lab participation is regarded as a requirement and an obligation for learning.  Grade points are given for attendance and participation for each class.  Classes and labs can be made up ONLY with prior approval of the instructor and for a maximum of two excused absences.

Calendar

The first class session will consist of safety training, shop orientation, and locker assignments, with a safety test at the start of the second class.

Written tests will be given on approximately class meetings 8 and 14, with reviews on the class prior to each test.

Shop projects are due no later than the end of the next to last scheduled class.

Additional Information

SAFETY IS OUR ONE MOST IMPORTANT CONCERNS.  NO ONE IS ALLOWED IN ANY SHOP WITHOUT SAFETY GLASSES AS WELL AS ANY OTHER APPROPRIATE SAFETY GEAR.  ALL STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO FOLLOW THE AMARILLO COLLEGE STUDENTS CODE OF CONDUCT.  ANY VIOLATION OF THIS CODE WILL BE DEALT WITH APPROPRIATELY.
