Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a class must:

• consult with their instructor to obtain a signed academic withdrawal request form to submit to the AskAC department for processing
• consult with the financial aid office if receiving financial aid
• consult with the Veterans Benefit Coordinator if receiving veteran benefits
• consult with their academic advisor to determine how withdrawing may affect their enrollment in future semesters
  • NOTE:  The Texas Education Code stipulates that students attending Texas institutions of higher education for the first time fall 2007 and later may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career, including courses from which transfer students have withdrawn at other Texas institutions of higher education. (Senate Bill 1231) Rule 4.10.

Expected Student Behavior

Behavioral Expectations/Classroom Ground Rules:

See Associate Degree Nursing Student Handbook, Professional Conduct; American Nurses Association Code of Ethics; and Amarillo College Student Rights and Responsibilities.

Students are full partners in fostering a classroom environment which is conducive to learning. In order to assure that all students have the opportunity to gain from time spent in class, unless otherwise approved by the instructor; students are prohibited from engaging in any form of behavior that distracts from the learning experience of fellow students. Inappropriate behavior in the classroom may result in a request for the offending student to leave class.

Grading Criteria

Refer to Clinical Performance Evaluation of Competencies (CPEC) in Course Manual.

Grading Criteria/Grade Scale:

1. The following criteria will be used to determine your grade:

A = 90-100

B = 80-89

C = 75-79

D = 60-74

F = below 60

Please note, grades will not be rounded.  For example, if you have a 79.8, this will be recorded as a "C."

A “C” or 75 is required to successfully complete the course.

1. 100% of the clinical grade is determined by the performance of clinical competencies on the Clinical Performance Evaluation of Competencies (CPEC). Competencies will be assigned a "4," “3,” “2,” “1,” or “0”.  A score of “0” in one or more competencies will result in clinical failure see. Please see the CPEC guidelines in the course manual.
2. Students must attend and participate in all clinical simulation experiences.

Must achieve 90% on the Level III Dosage and Solution Exam.  The exam may be repeated twice prior to clinical experience.  Failure to pass this exam by the third attempt will result in the inability to attend the clinical experience and meet the course objectives.  This means that the student will fail the clinical course if they do not achieve a 90% on the exam by the third attempt.

Student will not be allowed to participate in the clinical experience without current immunizations, TB skin testing, and American Heart Association CPR for Healthcare Providers.  It is the students' responsibility to ensure that all documentation is presented in a timely manner prior to the clinical experience.  A Class II Clinical Warning will be issued for no documentation.

Attendance

Attendance Policy:

Regular attendance is necessary for satisfactory achievement. Therefore, it is the responsibility of the student to attend clinical. Students must attend 100% of the clinical days. 

1. No more than one (1) excused absence will be permitted.  That absence will be made up on a set day as designated by the course instructor.  A clinical absence of more than one (1) day may result in course failure.  Planned events, vacations, and work schedules are not excused absences.
2. Students who arrive more than 30 minutes late to clinical will be required to make-up the clinical day.
3. Students who do not make up clinical absences or miss more than one (1) clinical RNSG 2160 day in a fall semester may fail the clinical course.  Clinical rotations include, but are not limited to, scheduled days at the hospital, community sites with a preceptor, clinical orientation, dosage and solution exam, and clinical simulation as provided in the course calendar.

    

4. According to the Academic Progression and Graduation Requirements for All Students, “a student may repeat any nursing course or combination of concurrently enrolled nursing courses (class and concurrent clinical course) one time only…Students may not repeat a course more than once or continue with more than two strikes or course combination in total while enrolled in the program.  The term ‘repeat’ shall be interpreted to mean re-enrollment following withdrawal, audit, drop, or unsatisfactory grade.”  Amarillo College ADN Student Handbook 2016.
