GRADING: Grades will not be curved and NO extra credit.
89.5 - 100 = A

00.0 - 59.4 = F

LECTURE EXAMS: 50% of the total grade for the semester.
Lecture and laboratory material will be combined into six (6) exams. Approximately 60 questions (multiple choice, fill in the blank, and short answer). The majority of exam material will come from the lecture and laboratory notes and assignments, but some material will come from the textbook, online assignments, and other assigned material.  All exams will be taken in a room designated by Mrs. Higgins. Use a #2 pencil on Scantron forms, provided to you.  If you use a pen it will result in a zero. If you MISS the DUE DATE and TIME for any exam, for any reason, a grade of zero will be assigned and you will have exactly the number of class days to make up the exam as you missed.  It is your responsibility to contact Mrs. Higgins to schedule this exam and any other missed assignments.  Failure to do so will result in a zero. It is your responsibility to obtain notes from your classmates for any days that you miss.

LABORATORY EXAMS, QUIZZES, ONLINE, AND ADDITIONAL ASSIGNMENTS: 25% of the total grade for the semester. There will be quizzes and additional assignments made during the semester. The homework assignments and online quizzes will be announced one week prior to the due date or longer on the AC Online Calendar.  In class quizzes will be unannounced.  These will be given at the beginning or at the end of lecture and lab class.  All quizzes will be fill-in-the-blank, multiple choice, labeling, and/or short answer and will range from 5-30 questions.  If you miss a class period, abide by the course contracts instructions on missed assignments. The lowest grade from this category will be DROPPED. If you MISS or COME IN LATE or LEAVE EARLY to any in class quiz for any reason or you MISS the DUE DATE and TIME for any other quiz or assignment, a grade of zero will be assigned for that quiz or homework assignment and that will be your drop for the semester.  You are allowed one day per class period missed to make up missed assignments.  The following day a zero will be entered for the assignment(s).  You will be held responsible for all notes taken while you were absent.  Obtain those from a classmate as soon as you return.  Communication is paramount!

FINAL EXAM: 25% of the total grade for the semester.
Comprehensive and Mandatory.  It will cover everything from the beginning of the semester.  Some material will come from previous exams and the rest comes from the textbook or other notes, assignments, and laboratories. It will be given in the classroom.
Approximately 100 multiple-choice questions plus short answer.  The Final Exam will be taken in a location designated by Mrs. Higgins.  All Quiz and Exam Rules apply to the Final Exam.

MAKE-UP POLICY: Refer to your course contract

DEPARTMENT MANDATORY TUTORING

In an effort to increase retention in Biology courses, any student who scores below a 70 on any exam (except the Final Exam) must complete a minimum of 1 hour mandatory tutoring time in room 409 on a date and time arranged with Mrs. Higgins.  Since tutorials at HHS are specific each day of the week, a student must schedule this with Mrs. Higgins.  It is essential that students maintain their grades in all other classes as well to assure that tutorial time is available for this purpose.

CHEATING : See STC Contract for complete list of rules.
Cheating will not be tolerated in any biology course at Amarillo College. On the first day of class, you will be required to sign and date a Course Contract. Included in the contract is the following statement: "I fully understand that if I cheat, or attempt to cheat, on any test I may receive an automatic “F” in the course. This grade will go on my permanent transcript and cannot be removed. Cheating includes, but is not limited to: the illegal use of books, notes, cell phones*, copying or leaving the Science Testing Center with a test or questions from a test. Cheating also includes helping, or attempting to help, other students to cheat on a test." You will not be allowed to take your tests until this contract is signed and on file with Mrs. Higgins.

*Please Note: NO CELL PHONES in the Testing Room. If we see your cell phone out AT ANY TIME, FOR ANY REASON, while in the testing room, YOU MAY RECEIVE an "F" for the course!

Attendance

Regular attendance is necessary for satisfactory achievement in Biology; therefore, it is the responsibility of the student to attend each class.  All students will be held to the attendance requirements for Texas High School students.  It is imperative for students to be in class for the full class period to earn the best grade possible.  Students leaving class early will still be responsible for the notes, activities, etc. missed.  An extra day will not be given for this type of absence.
