Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a class must:

  • consult with their instructor to obtain a signed academic withdrawal request form to submit to the AskAC department for processing
  • consult with the financial aid office if receiving financial aid
  • consult with the Veterans Benefit Coordinator if receiving veteran benefits
  • consult with their academic advisor to determine how withdrawing may affect their enrollment in future semesters
    • NOTE:  The Texas Education Code stipulates that students attending Texas institutions of higher education for the first time fall 2007 and later may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career, including courses from which transfer students have withdrawn at other Texas institutions of higher education. (Senate Bill 1231) Rule 4.10.

Course Description

Development of job process plan to include operation of lathes, milling machines, drill presses and power saws. Set-up, layout and tool maintenance is included. Emphasis on shop safety and preventative maintenance.

Expected Student Behavior

Students are required to have the specified tool-kit or tools for this class, no later than the second class session. Students are required to take notes during class, these notes may be used during test
 
Safety Policy, PPE and attendance.
Safety is everyone's job,and it starts before you enter the shop area. A machine shop has rotating machinery,high voltage electrical equipment,hot metal,sharp metal and chemicals,all of which can harm or even kill you.Professionlism is another habit that all of us must excell at. That is why the rules described below are needed.
Rule#1. All students are required to have signed the attendance sheet and be setting at table at the start of class.
Rule#2. No headgear of any type are allowed in classroom, hats or caps may be worn in lab.
Rule#3. Break time will be set by instructor
Rule#4. Instructor will set break time for class. When break is over all students must be back at work assignments.
Rule#5. All students will participate in clean up.
Rule#6. All students will respect other student and instructors.
Rule#7. No food or drink in shop.
Rule#8. If you make a mess you clean it up.
Rule#9. Only College approved short sleeved or long sleeved shirts rolled up past the elbow are allowed in both the classroom and lab. These shirts must be buttoned and tucked into pants.
Rule#10. Students will have all required tools and classroom materials each day class meets.
Rule#11. No tobacco products of any type will be used in classroom or lab.
Rule#12. Only Safety glasses' with side shields, that meet or exceed ANSI Z87.1 spec will be allowed.
Rule#13. Only long pants are allowed. No baggy pants,pants that allow body parts to be exposed, or torn pants.
Rule#14. Only College approved short sleeved or long sleeved shirts rolled up past the elbow are allowed in both the classroom and lab. These shirts must be buttoned and tucked into pants.
Rule#15. No open toed shoes of any type are allowed either in classroom or on shop floor,students should wear work boots or work shoes.
Rule#16. Hair over shoulder length needs to be secured safely with a hat, cap or hairnet.
Rule#17. No necklaces, bracelets, dangling earrings, rings or watches are to be worn in shop.
Rule#18. No horseplay of any type will be tolerated.
Rule#19. Any vandalism or theft will not be tolerated.
Rule#20. Any student under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
Failure to comply with rules #1-#10 will be entered  as zero on the grading rubric for each offence this may result in the student failing the class.
Failure to comply with rules#11-#17
First offense. The student will receive a written reprimand from instructor and be removed from that class, recieving no points for that day. Any quizzes or test that occur during that class cannot be made up and will counted as zero points.
Second offense. The student will be suspended from the class for the remainder of the semester and receive a FAILING grade for that class.
Failure to comply with rules #18 thru #20 will result in campus police being called to deal with student the student offender will be immediately suspended from the class for the remainder of the semester and receiving a FAILING grade for that class. Depending on severity of offence the student my be suspended from the college.
 
Tools, Equipment,
Tools and equipment specified for this class and any recommended preliminary class in the Machining Technology Curriculum should be purchased through the bookstore or you may purchase them by yourself, these tools and tooling have been choosen by the instructor for their quality and usefulness in helping the student to complete their required projects, within a set time limit and specified degree of accuracy. Any subsitutions by the students for a tool of lesser quality, is at the students own risk. Failure of a project because of sub-standard tools, or tooling that does not perform is no excuse a will be graded accordingly

Grading Criteria

Course Evaluations:

Students should complete all performance tasks on time at REQUIRED MASTERY LEVEL. Tasks, projects, and various assignments will be scored based on time; accuracy; neatness; completeness; procedure; skill; detail; motivation and attitude; safety practices; clean up; care of manuals, logbooks, and references; and other grading criteria. No task shall be rated until assignment is complete and correct. Complete shall include condition and cleanliness of equipment; clean up of work areas; tool condition and return of all supplies and materials to their proper location. Correct means that projects meets all print specifications in order to be graded.

 

Final (Overall) Grade Policy:

The final overall grade will be computed by adding the points earned as follows:

Makeup Policy

Students are responsible for getting notes from other students when absent. Lab activities will continue on schedule. Individuals will not receive credit for making up activities and there will not be special lab sessions. Some work can be caught up during regular lab times. Missing lab activities may prevent individuals from completing lab projects.

Process plan: Prior to machining a part each student must submitt a detailed process plan to instructor for approval and signature. This process plan must include material type and size, machines and tools to be used, speeds and feeds as well as the order of operations. Projects started without a process plan will not be graded.

Projects: Students have two options.

Option 1 NIMS Credentialing. Students choosing to earn NIMS credentials must successfully complete the required part and successfully pass the credentialing exam prior to the last class period. Student must also successfully complete, to print specifications two projects listed in the projects folder, in the Blackboard Class content section of the class.

Option 2 Student projects (Tools). Students who do not wish to earn NIMS credentials will have to choose and successfully complete, to print specifications a minimum of four projects contained in the projects folder, in the Blackboard Class content section of the class. 

Homework: Assigned homework is due at the beginning of the first class of the next week. No late homework will be accepted without instructor approval. Homework will consist of Textbook questions, math and theory handouts. 

Final: a comprehensive final will be administered.

 

 

Attendance

 

Attendance in class and lab participation is regarded as a requirement and an obligation for learning. Students will be expected to be in the class and seated by the start of each class period.Attendance roll will be called out at the beginning of the class and students not replying will be recorded as tardy losing ten attendance points.Roll will again called one-half hour after class has started, any student not replying will be recorded as absent and lose all points for that day.There are times that special circumstances arise but instructor needs to be made aware of these circumstances, the instructor will then decide if excuse warrants merit or not. Attendance will also means that until the end of class or instructor releases the class you are required to be there failure to be present during end of class roll will result in all points for that day being forfeited, again there will be times that special circumstances will be allowed but instructor needs to be informed and the the instructor will decide whether reason for leaving early is valid or not. Attendance also means that student has all the required material for said class, failure to comply with this is described in the below section describing student behavior.
