Administrative Drop Policy

Students who do not attend class on or prior to the census date will be administratively dropped. Effective Fall, 2016

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a class must:

• consult with their instructor to obtain a signed academic withdrawal request form to submit to the AskAC department for processing
• consult with the financial aid office if receiving financial aid
• consult with the Veterans Benefit Coordinator if receiving veteran benefits
• consult with their academic advisor to determine how withdrawing may affect their enrollment in future semesters
  • NOTE:  The Texas Education Code stipulates that students attending Texas institutions of higher education for the first time fall 2007 and later may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career, including courses from which transfer students have withdrawn at other Texas institutions of higher education. (Senate Bill 1231) Rule 4.10.

GEOL-1445-001 Oceanography

Prerequisites

Prerequisite: RDNG 0331-minimum grade of C or a score on a state-approved test indicating college-level reading skills

Course Description

The study of the world ocean and the role of the ocean in the Earth system including the flow and transformations of water and energy into and out of the ocean; the physical and chemical properties of seawater; circulation; marine life and its adaptations; and interactions between the ocean and the other components of the Earth.

The digital editions of the books are available in two forms; a web version and a e-reader downloadable version. In order to read the e-manuals, you must install an e-pub reader on your computer. When you go to the AMS bookstore to download your manual, you will see a link there to Adobe for a free reader. It will greatly simplify the download of the manual if you install the reader first.

Expected Student Behavior

Grading Criteria

The Final grade will be composed of:

Group Project                  5%
Discussion Thread          5%
Weekly Investigations     40%
Exams                             50%

The 2 lowest Investigations and 1 lowest exam score will be dropped.

The overall course grade will be according to the following percentages:

A   90 - 100 %
B   80 - 89.99 %
C  70 - 79.99 %
D  60 - 69.99 %
F - Below 60 %

There will be no extra credit assignments. If you have a question about a grade, you have two weeks from the date that the grade is posted to ask for a review. After that two weeks the grade will be permanent.
