The grading scale used for this course would then be applied as follows:
A = 90.0% - 100.0% of the total points possible for this course
B = 80.0% - 89.9% of the total points possible for this course
C = 70.0% - 79.9% of the total points possible for this course
F = 69.9% or less of the total points possible for this course
NOTE: A grade of 'D' is not possible
Points earned throughout the semester WILL NOT be rounded when computing the final semester grade.
MANDATORY SKILLS BUILDING/TUTORING: In an effort to increase retention in MLT courses, and to assist students having difficulty understanding complex subject areas, any student who receives a score of 70 points or less on any computer program must complete a mandatory skills building assignment before the end of the following week. Before receiving a skills assignment, students must first schedule a time with the instructor. The assignment will be given at that time.
The components of this course will be weighted as follows:
Completion of graded computer programs = 70% of the total grade
Quizzes/assignments = 20% of the total grade
Work Ethics = 10% of the total grade
A total accumulative point system is used and then weighted, as noted above, to calculate the final grade average.
Students will be required to work on specific sets of computer programs that are designed to enhance the student's knowledge of the broad base of information the encompasses the study of Medical Laboratory Technology, as well as to enhance their skills and knowledge of computer systems.
During the first three weeks of class, students will be expected to listen to the online presentation for that week, complete the learning activities associated with that presentation, and complete the assessment. The assessments are only available Thursday through Saturday. Students should refer frequently to the course calendar in order to keep up with the dates for these presentations and assignments/quizzes.
In addition, there are essentially two primary sets of web-based programs utilized in this course that involve a number of programs that encompass the vast body of knowledge in clinical laboratory science. The assignments for each week are located on the worksheet located in the Computer Programs folder under the Lessons Tab of the course. Students may log into the Media Lab module assignments as many times as necessary in order for them to score 85% or better on the questions for each exam that accompanies the assignments. If the student scores 85% or better on their first attempt on the Media Lab assignment exams, he/she will receive 100 points. If the student requires a second attempt in order to score 85% or better, he/she will receive 90 points. For each successive attempt, 10 points will be deducted. Students may work ahead on the assignments, but must complete all assignments by their due dates.
On the Exam Simulator, students will be assigned to complete weekly ASCP Board of Certification MLT practice exams (please see the course calendar). Students may work on the exam simulator as many times as they like. The highest score achieved for the assigned exam, in a given calendar week (Sunday through Saturday), will be recorded. Students are encouraged to look at the breakdown by subject area, and work on those areas that are identified as problematic.
In addition, students may complete any and all programs/tutorials on the MediaLab website, but they will only receive credit for those programs/tutorials assigned.
Students are required to complete assignments and a specific number of programs per week, as noted on the course calendar, and work ethics evaluations will be partially based on this level of productivity. Students are advised to maintain a worksheet that indicates the computer programs completed on any given date and the number of potential points received for a program. Students can access the worksheet within the course components. The instructor will maintain an official record of the actual number of points earned by the students for each program attempted. The instructor will periodically post points earned for programs completed, beginning at approximately the mid-point in the course. In addition, the instructor may periodically email students if there is a concern about student progress in the course.
All of the programs assigned must be completed no later than the deadlines posted on the official class calendar. Programs that are not completed will result in zero points earned for those programs.
INCOMPLETES
Incompletes are granted only for emergency situations such as hospitalization of the student just prior to the final exam, serious injury to the student on the day of the final exam, etc. Incompletes will not be granted for situations involving vacation plans, transportation difficulties, appointments, etc. Students who need to request an incomplete must do so prior to the scheduled time of the final exam with appropriate documentation given to the instructor.
DROPPING/WITHDRAWING FROM CLASSES
No administrative drops/withdrawals will be initiated by program officials. It is the responsibility of each student to drop or withdraw from a course. Students can drop a course via WebAdvisor, and must do so prior to the last day to drop/withdraw as posted on the Amarillo College Master Calendar. Students should be aware that failure to attend class does NOT result in being automatically dropped from a course, and WILL result in a grade of “F”.
Students should be advised that they may repeat a MLAB course only one time, and may repeat no more than two courses while enrolled in the program. The term “repeat” shall be interpreted to mean re-enrollment following withdrawal, drop or an unsatisfactory grade from a class. Students who are forced to completely withdraw from the college during a given semester may re-apply for admission to the program. Once the student has actually begun the program, he/she must complete all MLAB major courses within 36 months.
This is a semi self-paced course. Students may choose the programs on which they wish to work, within a given time frame and assigned category, but they must complete all of the programs for a given category by the weekly deadline (see course calendar for more information).
Quizzes may not be made-up. Students will be given 48 hours to take each quiz. If a student experiences problems with his/her computer or internet provider, or if the student is out of town, he/she can access ACconnect from ANY computer equipped with internet service, including public libraries, internet cafes, or at any of the student accessible Amarillo College computer laboratories. Students are advised NOT to wait until the last minute to take their quizzes.
Once a student logs into a quiz on ACconnect, the timer for that quiz begins and continues until the maximum allowable time for that quiz has expired, regardless of whether the student is online or offline. As a result, students are strongly advised not to log on and off during a quiz.
Late assignments will not be accepted.
Regular attendance is necessary for satisfactory achievement. Therefore, it is the responsibility of the student to attend class. Attendance is included in the Work Ethic grade throughout the course which is a component of the overall grade for this course. Attendance includes arriving for class late and leaving early. Less than 90% attendance in a course may result in failure of the course. Students are required to notify faculty in advance of class absence.
