Calculator: You will need a graphing calculator for this course. All computations and demonstrations in class will be done using a TI-84 Plus. The following calculators are acceptable: TI-83, TI-83 Plus, TI-84, or TI-84 plus graphing calculator. (The Math Department policy is that no TI-89’s or TI-92’s or TI-nspire’s may be used on tests.)
Graphing Calculator Checkout: Students unable to afford the purchase of a graphing calculator can apply to the Adult Students Program for the privilege of checking one out for the semester. Students that a) receive a PELL Grant, or b) receive public assistance services are eligible as long as calculators are available. These calculators are checked out on a “first come, first served” basis. If you do not meet the above criteria but cannot afford to purchase your own calculator, you may discuss your situation with the Adult Students advisors. Exceptions may be made in some cases.
Students who lose (due to accident / theft / any other mishap) or damage in any way a loaner graphing calculator will be required to replace the lost, stolen, or damaged calculator with a new TI-84 or TI-84 Plus graphing calculator. In order to receive your AC Connect Email, you must log in through AC Connect at https://acconnect.actx.edu .
If you are an active staff or faculty member according to Human Resources, use "Exchange". All other students, use "AC Connect (Google) Email".
Students are expected to behave in the classroom in a manner that is supportive of the learning environment. For a full discussion of appropriate behavior and student responsibilities, please refer to the Student Rights & Responsibilities Handbook which can be accessed using the link above or through the AC Website http://www.actx.edu .
Cheating is defined in Webster's College Dictionary as "taking an examination in a dishonest way, as by having improper access to answers." Improper access includes, but is not limited to, copying from another student's paper and using unauthorized sources of information while taking a test. Any student caught cheating on a test will receive a grade of zero with no chance of the final replacing the grade.
The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board sets the topics that must be covered in order to receive credit for a course. The instructor sets the pace to ensure that these requirements are met. Any student having trouble maintaining the pace should seek extra help from the instructor and/or a tutor.
Daily Homework:
Daily homework assignments will consist of online assignments. Online assignments will be submitted using MyMathLab and will be automatically graded on the website. Details on how to register and enroll in MyMathLab are given below and will also be given in class. Assignment deadlines will be indicated in MyMathLab with each homework set. I do not accept late homework.

7. You are now enrolled in your course and should see it listed on the Courses page when you login.
Course Homepage Menu:
1. To work on an assignment, click on Homework, the assignment name, and then on question 1.
2. Each homework problem will usually have some of the following buttons to the right of the problem: Help me solve This, View an Example, Video, Animation, Textbook, Connect to a Tutor, Ask My Instructor, Print, Study Plan, Tools for Success, Multimedia Library and HTML eBook. Each of these are further explained under your course content in Blackboard.
3. The Grade book will show you the assignment you have worked, the scores, and give you the chance to review any assignment.
Other Information:
1. When you send emails from the Ask My Instructor button on a problem, it generates and email that is sent with the reply email address as the email address you used when setting up your account. To view/edit this, click on Account at the top left corner of the page and enter your login name and password.
2. In general, you get 3 attempts on each problem. The following equal 1 attempt.
a. Entering an incorrect answer on a short answer or numeric problem 3 times.
b. Entering an incorrect answer on a multiple choice problem 1-2 times depending on the number of answer choices.
c. Using the Help Me Solve This button. (View an Example does not use an attempt.)
3. After each attempt, you will be presented with the correct answer and the Submit Answer button will become Similar Exercise (until 3 attempts have been used). To get another attempt on your problem, click on Similar Exerciese and a similar problem (same problem, different numbers) will appear.
4. You can print your assignments, work on them away from the computer, and then return to enter the answers. On each problem, there is a button that will open a popup and ask if you want to print that page or the entire assignment.
5. You do not have to "save" any work. Once you click on Submit answer and see either a green check mark or a red box with hints, the answers are saved.
6. If you open a homework assignment and see a green check next to a problem, you have received full credit for that problem. A red X means you have attempted the problem, but have not received any credit. If you have both a green check and a red X, you have received partial credit.
7. Be VERY careful when entering an answer. There are instructions written in blue below most problems, if you do not enter the answer in the specified format or with the requested rounding, the answer will be considered incorrect. Recall that entering an incorrect answer three times is one attempt.
Portfolios:
Portfolios will consist of completing written assignments covering the concepts we have discussed in lecture. Usually these problems require a deeper understanding of the basic concepts and students must apply critical thinking skills. Portfolio assignments will be submitted in class and graded by the instructor. Detailed instructions on format for portfolio assignments will be given in class and posted in Blackboard. Assignment deadlines will be announced as material is covered. I do not accept late portfolio assignments.
Exams:
Four (4) major exams and a mandatory comprehensive final will be given during the semester. If you know ahead of time that you will be missing an exam, you may schedule to take the exam early. Only under extenuating, verifiable circumstances and at the discretion of the instructor will an exam be given early. Make-up exams will not be given. If an exam is missed, the grade will be replaced with the score you make on the final exam. This policy applies to one exam only. If you miss more than one exam, a grade of zero will be averaged for the other missed exams. If you do not miss any exam during the semester, the grade on the mandatory final exam, if higher, will replace the lowest major exam grade.
In accordance with Mathematics Department policy, students scoring below a 70 on any major exam will be required to spend at least one hour in the Math Outreach Center getting help. This must be completed within the time specified by your instructor.
Your course average (A 100 - 90, B 89 - 80, C 79 - 70, D 69 - 60, F Below 60) will be calculated using the following scale:
My Math Lab...................................10%
Portfolio...........................................15%
Tests................................................60%
Final.................................................15%
I do not give extra credit work.
Regular attendance is essential in a math class. It is during class that questions about homework, new assignments & announcements, and course content will be covered.
Please remember the deadline for dropping a class in the Spring 2017 semester at AC is Friday, April 21, 2017. Approval from your instructor is needed in order to drop the course; therefore, you must contact your instructor before noon (12:00pm) on Friday, April 21, 2017 to request your withdrawal. If you stop attending class and your average drops below a 60 due to missed assignments and you do not officially drop the course by this deadline, you will receive an F for the course. Note: Late drops will NOT be given under any circumstance.
This is a tentative schedule subject to change by the instructor.
