Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a class must:

• consult with their instructor to obtain a signed academic withdrawal request form to submit to the AskAC department for processing
• consult with the financial aid office if receiving financial aid
• consult with the Veterans Benefit Coordinator if receiving veteran benefits
• consult with their academic advisor to determine how withdrawing may affect their enrollment in future semesters
  • NOTE:  The Texas Education Code stipulates that students attending Texas institutions of higher education for the first time fall 2007 and later may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career, including courses from which transfer students have withdrawn at other Texas institutions of higher education. (Senate Bill 1231) Rule 4.10.

MATH-1342-001 Statistics

Prerequisites

Prerequisite: MATH 1314 or MATH 1324-minimum grade of C or Department Chair consent

Course Description

Collection, analysis, presentation and interpretation of data, and probability. Analysis includes descriptive statistics, correlation and regression, confidence intervals and hypothesis testing. Use of appropriate technology is recommended.

OPTIONAL (recommended): TEXTBOOK:  Essentials of Statistics, 5^th Edition 2015
AUTHOR: Mario F. Triola    Published by: Pearson Education Inc.

You will be using your textbook a lot.  You will need to read out of it, and the notes that have the examples on them are examples out of the homework in the textbook.

REQUIRED: MyStatLab

If you purchase the text book, make sure it includes the MyStatLab Access Code.

You may choose to just buy an access code and not a textbook at all since the access code gives you access to an online e-book.  Just keep in mind that you will need to use your textbook a lot.  To purchase an access code, go to CourseCompass.com and use a credit card.  If you do not like to read online, you may want to consider purchasing the book as you will need to read the sections in the book for this course.

Supplies

CALCULATOR:  You will need a graphing calculator for this course.  The Amarillo College Mathematics Department recommends using a TI-83 Plus or TI-84 Plus.  You can use another graphing utility, however, be sure you have a manual to help you with the other brands.

You may use Microsoft Excel software to work a Project in this course.

After completing this course, the student will be able to demonstrate the ability to:

1. Explain the use of statistics and sampling as tools to reach reasonable conclusions.
2. Recognize, examine, and interpret the basic principles of describing and presenting data.
3. Explain the role of probability in statistics.
4. Examine, analyze, and compare various sampling distributions (binomial, normal).
5. Describe and compute confidence intervals.
6. Solve linear regression and correlation problems.
7. Perform hypothesis testing using statistical methods.
8. Conduct parametric and non-parametric inferential statistical tests.

Expected Student Behavior

ACADEMIC DISHONESTY will not be tolerated in this class and will result in a zero for the exam or assignment involved.  For more information, please see the college's academic dishonesty policy in the student handbook.  Also please see a document in the Orientation giving a more specific description of academic dishonesty in this course.

DISABILITY STATEMENT:  Any student who, because of a disabling condition, may require some special arrangements in order to meet course requirements should contact Accessibility Services (SS-125, Phone 371-5436) as soon as possible.

This class demands a great deal of time. Online courses often take more time than in-class delivery courses. Please expect to spend at least 1-15 hours each week on this course (this is for fall and spring semester courses; double this time commitment for summer courses). If your other life commitments do not allow you this amount of time to spend on the course, you may want to choose another course or delivery method.

The same rules for a traditional classroom apply. You are expected to conduct yourself in this course according to the standards outlined in Student Rights and Responsibilities.  Pay specific attention to the sections on plagiarism and academic dishonesty. Please also note that disrespect in any form toward your classmates or instructor will not be tolerated and may result in you being denied access to the course.

 

Grading Criteria

INSTRUCTIONAL METHOD / EXAMINATIONS / ASSIGNMENTS and GRADING:
Online homework (10% of your total grade):  All homework is in MyStatLab.  After registering, click on the "homework" button found on the homepage.  Your first homework called "HW 1" is over how to enter homework answers.  This assignment will not be due, it is just to help you get use to using MyStatLab .  The first section in each chapter does not have any homework problems so all of your HW assignments will start with section 2.  It is still important to read the first section in each chapter. Online homework must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. CST on the due date. The due dates for the online homework, quizzes, and tests will be listed on MyStatlab.  Three lowest homework grades will be dropped.

Online Quizzes (15% of your total grade):  Your first Online quiz is in Blackboard.  It is an Orientation Quiz over the syllabus and orientation material located in Blackboard. The rest of your quizzes will be over two or three homework sections.  These quizzes are short and are timed. They are located in MyStatLab. A total of 12 Quizzes will be given. Two lowest quiz grades will be dropped.

Online Tests (25 % of your total grade):  A minimum of 4 online tests will be completed in MyStatLab by the due date(s) indicated in MyStatlab.  Online tests may only be accessed once and will be timed.  All Online work (HW, Quizzes, and Tests) must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. CST on the due date.  The project will count the same as an online test.
 

Keep on track:  All homework, quizzes and tests are open and can be started early.  You may work ahead.  Do not to wait until the last minute to start an assignment so that if you are ill or have technical difficulities you are not put in a bind.

I DO NOT ACCEPT LATE WORK, NOR DO I GIVE ANY EXTRA CREDIT!

Paper Exams (50% of your final grade; each worth 25% of the final grade):  The midterm and final exams are proctored exams (Not online).  These exams are taken at the  Washington Street  Campus or can be proctored at an approved testing site.  Hereford Campus and Moore County Campus have been used by students in the past.  You will be required to provide a photo ID to take an exam.  Keep in mind your paper exams are 50% of your final grade so be sure you are doing your own homework, quizzes, and online tests so you can do well on the paper exams! If you need to take your midterm and final exam somewhere other than the Washington Street Campus math testing center, you must make arrangements with me! You can email me to make arrangements.

 

 

Attendance

ATTENDANCE POLICY:  Please remember the deadline for dropping a class at AC is published in the official Amarillo College Schedule of Classes. If you stop attending class and your average drops below a 60 due to missed assignments and you do not officially drop the course by this deadline, you will receive an F for the course.

You must be working on assignments in an online course to be considered attending. 

This semester the last day to drop his course is Friday April 21, 2017.  If you decide to withdraw from this course, you must let me know by 8pm on Thursday April 20, 2017!
