Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a class must:

  • consult with their instructor to obtain a signed academic withdrawal request form to submit to the AskAC department for processing
  • consult with the financial aid office if receiving financial aid
  • consult with the Veterans Benefit Coordinator if receiving veteran benefits
  • consult with their academic advisor to determine how withdrawing may affect their enrollment in future semesters
    • NOTE:  The Texas Education Code stipulates that students attending Texas institutions of higher education for the first time fall 2007 and later may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career, including courses from which transfer students have withdrawn at other Texas institutions of higher education. (Senate Bill 1231) Rule 4.10.

Supplies

  1. A USB flash drive, 4GB or higher
  2. Access to a PC/laptop running the Windows Operating System (Windows 7, 8 or 10)
  3. Microsoft Access 2013. Software is available on computers in the CIS computer Lab. If you are running the 2016 version of Microsoft Office, that version will work for this course. Realize, however, that the training, textbook, and projects are all geared toward Access 2013.
  4. Reliable access to the Internet. Internet access is available in the CIS computer labs

Student Performance

At the end of this course, students will learn

  1. Understand Database Fundamentals
  2. Understand Relational Databases and the difference between Access & Excel
  3. Table Design, Creation & Modification
  4. Entering data into the Database
  5. Determine the Data types used for various fields in a table
  6. Create Queries to pull relevant and useful information from the database.
  7. Create Reports for presenting information in a professional setting.

In addition to learning how to use Microsoft Access 2013, we will be looking at online databases such as Research databases, legal database, etc. and how to find and pull information from these databases.

The main focus of this course is to understand how a database works and to be comfortable enough to manage and extract information from the database.

If you are an active staff or faculty member according to Human Resources, use "Exchange". All other students, use "AC Connect (Google) Email".

Expected Student Behavior

Students are expected to maintain a high standard of individual honor in their scholastic work. Students who are guilty of cheating, plagiarism, copying, or dishonesty may receive a 0 on an assignment; may be excluded from class with a grade of F; or, in flagrant cases, may be suspended from the College.

Students should be prepared to put in  time at home working on the Assignment. Students should expect to put in atleast 5 hours work per week at home/lab

The Faculty of the Office Administration Program reserve the right to ask a student to verify any portion of a test or assignment by reproducing any specific section or the entire test/assignment in question. Any action that compromises the computer systems at Amarillo College, including but not limited to hacking or cracking, can result in a grade of "F" in this course and possible further disciplinary action.

Grading Criteria

Course grades will be assigned based upon the following criteria:

  • >89.5 = A
  • >79.5 = B
  • >69.5 = C
  • >59.5 = D
  • <59.5 = F

Student evaluation is based upon the following criteria and weights:

  • Attendance – 10%
  • Chapter Quiz – 10%
  • Hands-On Exercise – 15%
  • Practice Exercises – 10%
  • Grader Projects – 20%
  • Mid-term Exam – 15%
  • Final Exam – 20%

Attendance

  • Check your email daily.  The email address used by your instructor is the @amarillocollege.com email issued to each AC student.
  • Complete assignments by the scheduled date/time. 
  • Attendance will be taken during each class period. Excessive absence or lack of participation may result in failure of the course.
  • Students should plan on spending a minimum of 5-10 hours per week on this course. Actual amounts will vary depending on weekly assignments and topic complexity. Please schedule your time, so that you are able to devote the appropriate energy and effort to achieve success in this course.
