Hello! I am looking forward to working with you this semester.

Please contact me by email (keboatman@actx.edu) or through Messages in Blackboard if you would like to schedule a day and time to meet in person, Google Meet, or Microsoft Teams online to get your questions answered or to receive additional guidance on course concepts. Flexibility in scheduling is available, so do not hesitate to ask for what works for you.

In addition, the following scheduled office hours are available:

This is time set aside in my day that you can come to my office (Byrd 376) without an appointment. Just pop in!

Student Withdrawal Procedures

Students who wish to withdraw from a class must:

  • consult with their instructor to obtain a signed academic withdrawal request form to submit to the AskAC department for processing
  • consult with the financial aid office if receiving financial aid
  • consult with the Veterans Benefit Coordinator if receiving veteran benefits
  • consult with their academic advisor to determine how withdrawing may affect their enrollment in future semesters
    • NOTE:  The Texas Education Code stipulates that students attending Texas institutions of higher education for the first time fall 2007 and later may not withdraw from more than six courses during their academic career, including courses from which transfer students have withdrawn at other Texas institutions of higher education. (Senate Bill 1231) Rule 4.10.

Student Performance

  • Discuss background information and perspectives on the Internet, the Web, and HTML.
  • Use all the key aspects of HTML5, including common elements such as paragraphs, headings, and lists.
  • Understand and user various types of hyperlinks
  • Configure color and text with CSS
  • Incorporate visual elements and graphics
  • Develop web sites using recommended web design practices and accessibility
  • Understand CSS techniques for positioning and floating web page elements
  • Work with two-column and three-column CSS page layout.
  • Work with CSS sprites, configure CSS for print, CSS media queries,& CSS3 Flexible Box Layout Module
  • Design pages for the mobile web
  • Work with Tables
  • Create user-input forms.
  • Add media and interactivity to web pages including HTML5 video, audio, Flash®, Java™ applets, CSS Image Gallery, CSS3 transform and transition properties, javascript, jQuery, Ajax and HTML5 APIs.
  • Work with e-commerce security and order processing on the Web
  • Develop strategies for site promotion from the developer's point of view, utilizing search engine optimization

 Students will develop an elementary personal or business multi-page web site and publish that site to a web server.

If you are an active staff or faculty member according to Human Resources, use "Exchange". All other students, use "AC Connect (Google) Email".

Expected Student Behavior

Students are expected to maintain a high standard of individual honor in their scholastic work. Students who are guilty of cheating, plagiarism, copying, or dishonesty may be excluded from class with a grade of F; or, in flagrant cases, may be suspended from the College.
 
The faculty of the CIS Department reserves the right to ask a student to verify any portion of a test by reproducing any specific section or all of the test in question. Any action that compromises the computer systems at Amarillo College, including but not limited to hacking or cracking, can result in a grade of "F" in this course and possible further disciplinary action.

Grading Criteria

Final grades will be assigned as indicated below.

     A - Superior, Minimum of 90% average on exams and quizzes plus
           all homework turned in with a 90% average on graded work.
     B - Good, Between 80% and 89.5% average on exams and quizzes plus
           all homework turned in with a minimum average of 80% on
           graded work.
     C - Adequate, Between 70% and 79.5% average on all work.
     D - Minimum, Between 60% and 69.5% average on all work.
     F - Failing, Below 60% average on all work.

 

EVALUATION:
Your grade for the course is based on the following:

Chapter Assignments:        15% (drop the lowest score)
Chapter Quizzes:                25% (drop the lowest score)
Semester Project:               35% 
Final Exam:                         25%

The lowest Chapter Quiz and Homework Assignment will be dropped.

All course work (except the Final Exam)  are provided for each student at the beginning of the semester, along with due dates. It is your responsibility to complete each assignment, all homework, and take exams on the scheduled dates.

 

Attendance

  • Check your email daily.  The email address used by your instructor is the @amarillocollege.com email issued to each AC student. Your instructor will communicate important course updates, guidance, and hints via email.
  • Complete assignments by the scheduled date/time.  There is a "no late work" policy, except in extreme circumstances.
  • Attendance for seated classes will be taken during each class period. Attendance for online classes will be assessed by completion of training simulations in MyITLab.  Excessive absence or lack of participation may result in failure of the course.
  • Students should plan on spending a minimum of 10-12 hours per week on this course. Actual amounts will vary depending on weekly assignments and topic complexity.
  • Due to the nature of this course and the volume of work required to master this material, students are rarely successful when attempts are made to complete work during one or two days each week. Please schedule your time, so that you are able to devote the appropriate energy and effort to achieve success in this course.
  • Your instructor, Karen Boatman, may be contacted by email through the course in Blackboard. If Blackboard is not available, please email keboatman@actx.edu.  In-person meetings or additional help are available if needed or desired. Please contact by email to set up a convenient day/time.

Assignments are due by 10pm each Monday during Weeks 1-7; assignments are due by 5pm on Thursday (7/27) during Week 8.

Required coursework includes Chapter Assignments (Hands-On Practice in each chapter), Chapter Quizzes (located in weekly folders in Blackboard), Final Exam (located in weekly folder in Blackboard), and Semester Project (created by you from scratch). Chapter Assignments and Semester Project Phases 1-2 will be uploaded to Blackboard.
