Course Description

Review fundamentals; study diatonic harmonization, cadences, diatonic seventh chords and modulation.

The National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) and the Performing Arts Medicine Association (PAMA) have developed a comprehensive overview of neuromusculoskeletal, vocal and hearing health issues for postsecondary schools and departments of music.  Information of a medical nature is provided by PAMA; information regarding contextual issues in music programs, by NASM. The following links address the risk of noise-induced hearing loss, neuromusculoskeletal and vocal injury—all of which are widespread and serious public health issues for musicians and others.

Student Performance

This course will provide for the student a thorough knowledge of voice leading in the four part chorale writing style.  After studying the material presented in this course of study, the student will be able to do the following as evaluated by the faculty in the department/program:

 

1.       Know part writing and voice leading rules.

2.       Recognize harmonic progressions using dominant seventh chords, leading tone seventh chords and non-dominant  

          seventh chords.

3.       Recognize examples using modulation.

4.       Recognize secondary dominant chords.

5.       Know how to part write examples using the above mentioned chords.

6.       Be able to analyze music from the Baroque, Classical and Romantic style periods.

 

Each students will be able to demonstrate competencies identified from the learning outcomes.

Grading Criteria

Based on part writing assignments, analysis of music, semester project and performance of project and comprehensive final test. Each exam will be worth 100 points. Final grade will be based on the following scale:

 

A=89.5-100%

 

B=79.5-89.4%

 

C=69.5-79.4%

 

D=59.5-69.4%

 

F=Below 59.4%

 

It is the responsibility of the student to makeup all work.

Attendance

Regular attendance is necessary for satisfactory achievement.  Each class builds on the material covered in the previous classes.  Therefore, it is the responsibility of the student to attend class.
