Course Description

This course explains the principles of traffic control and access control lists (ACLs) and provides an overview of the services and protocols at the data link layer for wide-area access. Describes user access technologies and devices and discovers how to implement and configure Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP), Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet (PPPoE), DSL and Frame Relay. WAN security concepts, tunneling and VPN basics are introduced. Discuss the special network services required by converged applications and an introduction to quality of service (QoS).

Student Performance

  End-of-Course Outcomes:  Describe the impact of applications (Voice Over IP and Video Over IP) on a network; implement basic switch security (port security, trunk access, management vlan other than vlan1, etc.); configure, verify, and troubleshoot DHCP and DNS operation on a router (CLI/SDM); describe today’s increasing network security threats and explain the need to implement a comprehensive security policy to mitigate the threats; configure and apply ACLs based on network filtering requirements (CLI/SDM); configure and apply an ACLs to limit telnet and SSH access to the router using (SDM/CLI); configure NAT for given network requirements using (CLI/SDM); configure and verify a basic WAN serial connection; configure and verify Frame Relay on Cisco routers; and describe VPN technology (importance, benefits, role, impact, components).

Expected Student Behavior

Food and drink may be allowed in the classroom setting, at the discretion of the instructor, but food and drink are not allowed in labs.

 Cell phones must be turned off or in silent mode in the classroom setting and pagers and cell phones must be turned off while in labs.

\ The opportunity to make-up an exam and/or lab will be determined by the circumstances of each individual, permitted at the discretion of the instructor. 

\ The time and place for make-up test will be determined by the instructor.

Attendance

\ Please remember the deadline for dropping a class at AC is published in the official Amarillo College Schedule of Classes.  If you stop attending class and do not officially drop the course by this deadline, you will receive an “F” for the course.

\ Attendance in class is regarded as requirement, and obligation for learning.  Students will be warned and after two (2) absences and counseled by the instructor after three (3) absences.

\ Four (4) absences in any one semester may be cause for students to receive a failing grade for the course.

\ Being tardy three (3) times will be considered one (1) absence.I

\ t is the responsibility of the student to make up any work missed due to absences and to gain missed lecture notes through outside reading and/or note from classmates.

\ Make up examinations (and other assignments) will be   permitted at the discretion of the instructor.  The time and place for make-up test will be determined by the instructor.
