AC Launches Updated Fire Protection Degree for Working Firefighters
Beginning this fall Amarillo College will offer fire protection technology courses with more flexibility. The courses, designed to earn an associate degree in applied science, are set up in an 8-week online format and tuition-free options.
“These courses are more flexible than ever and provide great long-term career value for firefighters,” said Steve Malley, coordinator of the AC Regional Fire Academy. “We are continuing to make this program more accessible.”
Once a student completes a fire academy and basic emergency medical technician courses—whether at Amarillo College or another accredited provider—they can complete all remaining coursework for the degree 100% online.
“The updated format supports the demanding and often unpredictable schedules of working firefighters, allowing them to balance education with their commitment to public service,” said Eric Wallace, AC director of public service programs.
Fall classes begin on Monday, Aug. 25 and Monday, Oct. 27, and advising and enrollment is open now. Prospective students are encouraged to start the advising process as early as possible to plan their schedules and apply for financial aid if eligible.
Most Texas firefighters qualify for a state tuition exemption, meaning they may attend college tuition-free, paying only standard fees and book costs. Amarillo College tuition is already significantly lower than that of a university, and the AAS degree may transfer into some bachelor's programs, such as Emergency Management at West Texas A&M University.
For those who completed a fire academy or Basic EMT courses elsewhere, AC offers credit by licensure for a small processing fee, making it easier to apply past training toward degree requirements.
Firefighters interested in the program can meet in-person with academic advisors at Amarillo College’s First Responders Academy, located at 3891 Plains Blvd., in Amarillo. Call 806/470-4450 to schedule an appointment.
