"Men are disturbed not by events, but by the views which they take of them." - Epictetus
Participants will learn how to apply Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) to stressful life situations. Research indicates that cognitive therapy interventions can be learned in educational contexts and can be used to help reduce teacher burnout and help teachers cope more effectively with difficult people both at home and in the work place.
Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) emphasizes that no matter what the situation or event, it is largely our attitude (flexible vs rigid) that we bring to the adverse situation that causes our disturbance and corresponding choice of self-sabotaging behaviors. The evidence-based strategies you will learn in this session will help you to identify and challenge unhealthy ways of thinking (attitudes) that lead to emotional disturbance. Learning and then practicing healthy (flexible and rational) ways of thinking, will help us to resolve emotional and behavioral problems and to lead us to happier and more fulfilling lives.
In this PLCohort, participants will be able to
- Understand the difference between unhealthy negative emotion and healthy negative emotion and be able to apply this concept to stressful life situations.
- Apply the four categories of Irrational (Unhealthy) Beliefs (Rigid Attitudes) and their Healthy Alternative Beliefs (Flexible Attitudes) to stressful lie situations.
- Apply the REBT model of disputation to facilitate the participant's development of an effective new philosophy and functional new behavior towards the stressful situation.

At the conclusion of this PLCohort, participants will have engaged in many discussions over the REBT process. They will pick at least one strategy and incorporate it into a lesson in the upcoming session. Participants will share a short presentation with peers showcasing how they used this strategy in their lesson. They will then complete a final reflection and future action plan.
