As the student population at Amarillo College becomes ever more culturally diverse (age, gender, race, ethnicity, religious backgrounds, etc.), many faculty find themselves interacting more and more with students who are quite different from themselves. It is sometimes a challenge to know how to teach students from diverse backgrounds, when each of us brings our own unique culturally-based expectations to the classroom. This course is designed for faculty who are looking to dig deeper into their own teaching practices and explore strategies and initiatives for incorporating students' cultural backgrounds and experiences so that the focus is on the whole student. The foundations of culturally responsive teaching are addressed, as well as strategies for helping students who have suffered from trauma. By the end of this course, faculty will feel more confident implementing the principles of culturally responsive teaching into their classrooms.
