Learning Stations

Stations

Learning stations are physical locations located in the classroom where students are asked to solve a problem and answer some questions using the supplemental materials. Students have the option to work alone or with students within their small group.

For learning stations to be effective within your classroom:
1) The station should have a problem to solve.
2) The instructions at each station should be easy to follow.
3) The key concepts should be highlighted in the station for students to know they are important.

Identify a concept that can be broken down into smaller chunks. Determine what each station will focus on and prepare materials for each (Helpful Tip: Prepare station instructions and have it printed for students to read at each station). Divide the students into equal groups based on the number of stations that are presented for the classroom. Give students an allotted amount of time at each station then have them rotate until they have reached all stations. At the end of the class summarize and reflect on learning.

Use Google docs that allow for live editing and collaboration. Link them to your Blackboard classroom. Each live document should contain the prompt and instructions at the top, followed by spaces for each student's individual reactions. Students should be instructed to write one or two-sentence reactions, read their classmate's reactions, and mar the reactions they found most thought-provoking.

Alternately, find online sites to create a virtual exhibit. A search using "educational exhibits' as keywords will help you to find multiple and varied sites, including sites that are resources for finding other sites.
