Title:

Leaving the Silo: Interdisciplinary Teaching Strategies

Description:

We live in a knowledge-based society, which means that information is given a premium, and receiving data is seen as the driving force of education. However, what we often miss out on are the more profound levels of Understanding and Integration of this knowledge. Moreover, because there is an overabundance of data in any given field, the anxiety to become hyper-specialized often creates the so-called algorithmic echo chamber, or, at the workplace, the Silo. This PLC is a workshop on how to leave the Silo and to engage in interdisciplinary teaching strategies so that we do not teach and learn with blinders, but rather with open minds and without the fear of not knowing something that is beyond our wheelhouse. Instead, we will see how we can incorporate the bigger picture of integrative learning towards a more comprehensive and holistic educational experience.

Learning Objectives:
  • Identify how we may be creating the Silo ourselves.
  • Develop a three-tiered teaching model of: Knowledge acquisition, Understanding, and Integration.
  • Come up with strategies that help us break out of an intellectual echo chamber.
  • Investigate what it means to be “interdisciplinary” within your field.
  • Create educational projects that teach students to synthesize data.
  • Refashion and retool former assignments to better suit the needs of diverse learners in the classroom.
  • Learn how to create an interdisciplinary network on campus.
  • Share teaching methods from diverse disciplines and adapt them to our own.
