What Are Accommodation Plans?

An accommodation plan is a list of approved accommodations, determined on an individualized basis, with the purpose of providing access to the environment, program, course, etc.

Disability Services staff will review all information to create an individualized accommodation plan that addresses your specific needs.

Questions About Accommodation Plans

Any student with a disability is eligible to apply for services. A student with a disability means any person who has a physical or psychological condition which substantially limits one or more major life activity (walking, seeing, hearing, speaking, breathing, learning, or working); has a record of such impairment; or is regarded as having such an impairment.

Eligible conditions may include, but are not limited to:

  • Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorders
  • Autism Spectrum Disorders
  • Developmental Disabilities
  • Health Conditions
  • Physical Impairments
  • Deaf/Hard of Hearing
  • Learning Disabilities
  • Mental Health Conditions
  • Psychological Disorders
  • Mobility Impairments
  • Speech and Language Impairments
  • Blind/Vision Impairments; and/or
  • Temporary Conditions

An accommodation plan is a list of approved accommodations, determined on an individualized basis, with the purpose of providing access to the environment, program, course, etc.

Accommodations are determined based on the individual needs of the student. Some possible accommodations may include:

  • Alternative formats (Braille, e-text, large-print, text-to-speech)
  • Alternate furniture Alternate testing environments
  • Extended testing time
  • Note-takers
  • Note-taking software or recorders
  • Sign Language Interpreters

Disability Services can only provide accommodations; we cannot modify the content or expectations of a course or a program.

One simple way to remember the difference between an accommodation and a modification is with the HOW and WHAT statements:

  • Accommodations change How something is learned.
  • Modifications change What is learned.
