Application Considerations

Sonography Program Application Considerations

Applicants to the Sonography Program must be able to meet performance standards.

  • Read, write, and communicate effectively in English.
  • Have full range of motion of both arms (shoulders, wrists, and hands) and be able to manipulate a transducer and keyboard.
  • Have auditory ability to be able to assess patients' needs, and be able to see with acuity not less than that required for a Texas driver's license (20/40).  Corrective lenses and hearing aids are allowed.
  • Be able to lift 50 pounds unassisted.

Admission into the Diagnostic Medical Sonography program is scored as follows:

TEAS Cumulative Score Range

Program applicants must complete the TEAS Exam. Exam results must be within the application period (Jan-May) of the application year.  Composite score content areas include MathReadingScience, and English & Language Usage.

Please Note:

  • Applications with a composite TEAS score below 58.7% (Proficient) will not be considered for admission.
  • Only one TEAS attempt is permitted per admission cycle.

Casper Test

  • 75th – 100th percentile = 25
  • 50th – 75th percentile = 15
  • 25th – 50th percentile = 10
  • 1 – 25th percentile = 5

Max = 25 points

Required Courses

Sonography curricula leading to an "Associate in Applied Science Degree" include a core of general education courses and all sonography lectures and lab courses required to obtain ARRT certification or as an American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS). A plan for well-structured, competency-based practicum (clinical) education is also an essential part of the curriculum.

Only two total attempts are allowed for each prerequisite. Points will be given to the following prerequisite courses: BIOL 2401, BIOL 2402, PHYS 1305, MATH 1314 and HITT 1205. Points will be based on the highest recorded course grade of the two attempts. Prerequisite classes must be completed with at least a C to qualify.

 All prerequisites (including those that aren't scored for points) need to be completed by May of the application year.

Courses worth points are scored as follows:

A&P I (BIOL 2401) & A&P II (BIOL 2402)

  • A = 15
  • B = 10
  • C = 5

Medical Terminology (HITT 1205)

  • A = 10
  • B = 7
  • C = 3

PHYS 1305 & Math 1314**

  • A = 5
  • B = 3
  • C = 1

**College algebra must be completed with a C or better.  If you want to retake, you may take another MATH course to better your grade for acceptance.
 PHYS 1401 can also be substituted for PHYS 1305. 

Prerequisites: 
Required General Education courses :

  • BIOL 2401 Anatomy and Physiology I
  • BIOL 2402 Anatomy and Physiology II
  • PHYS 1305 Introductory Physics or PHYS 1401 College Physics 
  • ENGL 1301 Freshman Composition I
  • MATH 1314 College Algebra
  • EDUC 1100- First Year Seminar-Learning Framework
  • Any Speech Communication course from the approved core list
  • Any Social or Behavioral Science course from the approved core list
  • Any Creative Arts or Language, philosophy and culture course from the approved core list
  •  HITT 1205 Medical Terminology 

The CASPER assessment is required only for applicants whose total points are in the top percentage of the program’s initial application scoring process. Applicants who are selected to proceed will receive an official email notification from the Program by May 19, 2026, with details on the next steps.
Applicants who do not receive this invitation are not required to complete CASPER."
 
For Amarillo College, the total student fee will be $70 — this includes a $50 base fee and a $20 distribution fee.
We’ll have two testing dates available for students:

  • Tuesday, May 19th at 7:00 p.m. (Central Time)
  • Saturday, May 23rd at 12:00 p.m. (Central Time)

Sonography Information Session

Sonography students are required to attend an information session in addition to the general Health Sciences meeting. All Sonography information sessions will be held in the new Simulation Center (HSSC), room 104.

Program Requirements Once Accepted 

You do not need to complete the following Immunizations and Screening Requirements until you are accepted into the program.

Once you are accepted, you are required to have the following:

  • Criminal Background Check
  • Drug Screens

  • Measles Vaccination
  • Rubella Vaccination
  • Mumps Vaccination
  • Hepatitis B Vaccinations (must have started the series)
  • Varicella Vaccination
  • Tdap Vaccination
  • Flu vaccine
  • Bacterial Menengitis Vaccination
  • Tuberculosis Skin Test

The Process

All Health Science programs at Amarillo College have the same Steps to Apply. A select percentage of top-ranking applicants must complete the Casper Assessment as part of the 2025/26 Sonography Program admissions process.

Selection Process Overview

  • The Sonography Program accepts 12 students each year.
  • The top 50% of applicants will be required to take the Casper assessment.
  • Final selections are based on combined application review and Casper scores.
