Dual credit students at AC qualify for state in machine programming events

Six Amarillo College dual credit students who currently attend AmTech Career Academy have qualified for state competition in computer numerical control (CNC) machining events.

The qualifiers earned the right to compete at the state level based on the excellent results they achieved while competing at the SkillsUSA District 3 Leadership & Skills Conference at South Plains College in February.

AmTech sophomores Rafael Robles, Zoey Garcia and Phillips “Quint” Gentry, and juniors Aiden Arizpe, Misael Perez and Abel Trevino, qualified for the Texas SkillsUSA competition April 3 in Corpus Christi. There they will compete in CNC Lathe Programming, CNC Mill Programming, and General CNC Programming.

CNC (computer numerical control) is when a machinist operates and programs machine tools such as lathes, mills and grinders that are controlled by a computer to produce precision metal or plastic parts.

AmTech machining students who participated at the SkillsUSA District 3 Leadership & Skills Conference at South Plains College are taught by AC instructor Bob Gustin and AmTech instructor David Gibson.
