AC Enrolling Now for Spring EMS Programs
Amarillo College is now enrolling students for its Spring 2026 Emergency Medical Services Professions (EMSP) programs at the First Responders Academy, a state-of-the-art facility located at 3891 Plains Blvd. in Amarillo. The College offers a full range of EMS training options — from Basic EMT and Advanced EMT to Paramedic certification and the Associate of Applied Science in Emergency Medical Services Professions — preparing students for success in one of the most vital and rewarding fields in public safety.
The Basic EMT Certificate Program remains one of Amarillo College’s most popular entry points into emergency medical services. Designed for flexibility, the program offers morning, afternoon, or evening class options, each meeting just two days a week for four hours per day each spring and fall, and three days a week during the summer.
Students gain a blend of classroom instruction, hands-on clinical experience, and field internships that equips them to respond effectively to medical emergencies in pre-hospital settings. Upon completion, graduates are eligible to take certification exams through the National Registry of EMTs.
“Our goal is to make emergency medical training accessible to everyone,” said Wade Olsen, program director of Emergency Medical Services Professions. “Whether you’re starting a new career, preparing for the fire academy, or continuing on to become a paramedic, the Basic EMT course is a crucial first step toward making a difference in your community.”
For those ready to advance, Amarillo College offers a one-year hybrid Paramedic Program that provides the next level of certification and responsibility in the EMS field. Students attend in-person classes one day a week on Wednesdays, with additional coursework completed online — a format well suited for working professionals.
“This hybrid format allows students to balance work, family, and school while earning the most advanced level of pre-hospital medical training,” Olsen said. “Our graduates go on to serve in 911 response, critical care transport, and leadership roles throughout the Panhandle and beyond.”
In addition to the Basic EMT and Paramedic programs, Amarillo College offers Advanced EMT training and the Associate of Applied Science in EMS Professions, allowing students to build their credentials and advance their careers. Participants also benefit from Amarillo College’s nationally recognized Culture of Caring, which includes access to success coaches, free tutoring, academic support, and financial aid for those who qualify.
Located within the First Responders Academy, the EMS programs share training space with Amarillo College’s Fire and Law Enforcement Academies, giving students the unique opportunity to train alongside future firefighters and peace officers in realistic, scenario-based environments.
“We meet students where they are — whether that’s right out of high school or making a career change later in life,” said Brandon Fansler, EMSP instructor. “If you’re ready to serve, we’re ready to train you.”
The EMT program features open enrollment, with no separate application required beyond standard Amarillo College admissions. For more information, contact the First Responders Academy at 806-457-4450 or email Wade Olsen at cwolsen@actx.edu.
